As a fan of over fifty years standing I think Zaha gets the nod over Don Rogers

Absolutely. Attilo Lombardo Originally posted by matthau
One can compare zaha and Lombardo easily and fairly due to being of the same position Zaha is more like Ryan giggs with speed and tricks, Lombardo was more like an alien, he didn’t need the speed or tricks, shielding the ball, keeping possession, playing passes that no other palace player could read cos he was light years ahead in the way his footballing brain worked. Lombardo would have no looked out of place in a team consisting of zidane and Ronaldinho, not quite sure wilf would’ve looked quite in the same catagory, yet, anyway Lombardo world class, wilf champs league quality . I think in answer to that question, you have to think 'who was great for the club'. Freedman in my time, was great for the club - his important goals, his work ethic, his second spell, as coach, manager. Lombardo, was great to watch - but he didn't bleed red and blue. Martyn - he was good, but excelled when left - unsurprisingly. Johnson, he was great for the prem, but it didn't help us. Rambo, that promotion season, behind the scenes, the passion on the field, was great. Morrison, was great for the club but we were always in lower leagues. Zaha, this season has been great for the club. Next season, if in the prem, Zaha will, if he continues this fine form, with be the greatest player in my time, freedman a close second.

I love Wilf. I loved Clinton. Wilf is the new Clinton....key man, epitomises the club and is South London with it. God I hope he doesn't leave in the Summer.
Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune) |

Put it all in perspective.. Today, yes, Wilf is fantastic..the best...BUT, I go back to the days of Johnny (Budgie) Byrne.. I remember him as fantastic, nobody like him etc, etc. So time is the factor, Everybody see's it differently.. Best goalkeeper ever..Vic Rouse..John Jackson, Jules, etc,etc..
Here since 81...(LAST CENTURY !!).. x-Dunraven School, early 1960.... Palace 'nut' since 58.... |

By some of the criteria mentioned here, Shaun Derry was a great serveant. Played out of position, involved in promotion, came back as captain during admin....

Everyone has their favourite. Of the current team I love Luka who was just as responsible for today’s result if not arguably moreso. In days gone by Lombardo was immense. Always loved Clinton!! Lombardo's career at Palace was as short as his haircut. Technically one of the best but if you are talking greatest then he must be ingrained in the clubs history far more, so for me Jim Cannon or Geoff Thomas, both in periods of great Palace teams and both great leaders. Our greatest player is not necessarily the best player. Lombardo world class for sure but wilf is far greater than him as a palace player in my eyes.

Been supporting since my first game in 1979 and it is really hard to compare players now. The pitches are so much better, and it is far less physical. Imagine Kenny Sansom and Vince Hilaire in todays game. My top 5 would sadly not include Zaha just yet, although if he continues to improve then he will become a true club legend. I could say the same for Luka too. Mine are: You could also argue Hinchelwood, Martyn, Burridge, Thomas, Bright, Fan Z, Mabbutt, Hilaire, Kember. The list could go on, just depends what you are lookimg for. We have been blessed with some fantastic players in my time, just a shame they all played at different times.
Some people are like Slinkies … not really good for anything, but you can’t help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs. |

I have just got in from a day out and watched the motd highlights. From my standpoint will we ever see a player greater than Wilf Zaha? I am 29 been supporting palace for 19 years so missed the glory years etc but it's not just the skill, trickery etc but the passion this guy shows for the club. The way he celebrates goals - particularly brighton ones - feels me with so much happiness. Maybe i am being silly but can't see another talismanic homegrown player like him coming along for a life time. Long live king Zaha
Zaha is an excellent player but like all goal scorers he gets the headlines. My favourite has always been Kenny Sansom for the difference he made to our team and our performances.
