Teacher intuition. Usually if you say can you hold on or do you want to make up time at the end, they somehow manage to hold on.

I did a huge piss all over the reading area in my class when I was 8 because I was scared to ask the teacher if I could go to the lav. Despite my trousers being soaked in urine I managed to escape blame somehow. Hardly Sherlock Holmes my teacher.

Maybe I'm an idealist but I think we should try to treat children with respect wherever possible. Can you imagine not being allowed to go to the toilet? It's pretty much just prisoners and children who are treated like that. Preventing children from going to the toilet to waste time does not mean that they will learn instead - you can't force a child (or anyone) to learn if they don't want to. But like I said, I am an idealist

Schools shouldn't be f***ing around with this kind of thing. It's a sensitive topic for kids anyway when young and not being allowed to go when they need to is barbaric

The child should really have gone during break time. She is in Year 6 and she would know the class rules by now. Most schools have policies on this and they would begin from at least Y3 upwards so by Year 6 children should know that they should only be going to the toilet at break times. There will be times when children need to go outside of these times and then it is up to the teacher's discretion as to whether or not a child should be allowed to go. Teaching is a difficult job and the parent should support the teacher. I think each teacher will act differently on this issue but as said earlier most schools will not allow pupils to go to the toilet during lesson times as it disrupts learning. It would be nice to think that the parent would be understanding to the child while also supporting the teacher who is only upholding school rules. Edited by sitdownstandup (13 Dec 2017 9.37am)

People need to learn moderation and control. Let them widdle at random and it will just lead to all sorts of terrible behaviour. For instance at football matches where folks arrive late after 6 pints disrupt the whole row to sit (as they always have a seat in the middle, then in the first half alone get up to answer the call of nature 6 times ( suppose it was cold.) Nip this in the bud early I say!

I've gone during teaching time once in 2 years. Usually I hold it as there is no one to cover. The toilets are just outside my class, so the kids can go as soon as break arrives, if they don't take that chance because they are too busy playing, tough luck. I agree you can't disrupt a whole class and understand your point of view. Edited by PaddyMcPaddy (12 Dec 2017 10.28am)

These kids will be going to secondary school in a few months, if they can't hold their wee what hope have they got? One of the mums was angry because her daughter was busting in the car on the way home after I had made her wait all afternoon. Why didn't she go after school if she was that desperate? You strike me as the sort of teacher who would rather see my daughter bleed everywhere rather than go to the loo. As happened at her school Then when I write to the school they insist it must be a doctors note and not a letter from a parent. She also has a phobia of toilets after finding her nan dead when she was 3. Still as long as you're happy absolutely pathetic Edited by Y Ddraig Goch (12 Dec 2017 11.27am)

Holding your pee can cause many adverse effects such as: Constant and strong pain when urinating There isn’t a set guideline for how long you can safely hold your pee. It varies from person to person.
