Think I agree with the consensus, he'd be worth buying at the right price. Otherwise loan again if both sides are willing.

Failing that, we should spend the money on a hard working + creative midfielder to replace 30+ cabaye and Macca. (I suggested Joe Allen but got shot down)

Not a fan to be honest.

Strong receiving the ball in midfield, beating a couple of players and driving forward with the ball. But haven't seen him get a decent shot off and looks ponderous and indecisive in the final third.

Don't think he works hard enough when we're not in possession. Poor in the air for a big bloke.

As others have alluded to all of the above make it difficult to work out where you play him.

Think Reidewald might take Macca’s midfield mantle. We do need a long term replacement for Cabaye but Joe Allen ain’t it.

I can't see why you'd place more value on one (admittedly good 45 minute) performance in an meaningless International friendly over a series of mediocre displays for us. We play - hopefully - in the Premier League and that's where he must be judged.

I like him - but I'm not convinced we should pay the type of money we all expect Chelsea to demand.

He played for 90 minutes, against the World cup winners and a perennially outstanding team. Why would anyone not give that the credence it deserves? International games, friendly or otherwise, can only discredited by playing against lesser opponents, not the benchmark sides like Germany, Brazil etc.

As far as I'm aware we have no idea what Chelsea expect to demand, but that wasn't the question you asked.

He is an excellent player and he'll only improve IMO.

People expect far too much too soon. In the premier league I could name a s***load of players who have been deemed to be not good enough/overrated in their first full premier league seasons.

I'll throw out the following to see what people think:

Henry
Drogba
Salah
Lukaku

I think I have to agree - if anyone can pinpoint a game in which he's been the most influential player on the pitch then they have a better memory than me,

I realise he's had injury problems and i really do like him as a player but he's not persuaded me that he's the 'Rolls Royce' the media keeps describing him as.

Whether or not we try to sign him is another matter - surely the crucial point would be the price. I can't see Chelsea selling him for under £30M and (as much as he's shown glimpses of excellence) I'd be far happier to take him on loan for another season rather splurge a huge chunk of the Summer of budget on a player who has - on reflection - failed to convince.

I have to agree. In his defense Roy has played him in positions where I believe he is less effective. Anyway I think the money Chelsea would demand would probably kill any deal.

And toto scillachi who played in Italia 90 was the best striker in that World Cup and couldn’t stop scoring and yet was s*** before and after.

Loftus could prove in time to be the dogs bollox but as of now he hasn’t impressed me much at all.

HOWEVER

the potential is admittedly there and if we can afford we should consider

But I’d prefer shakiri tbf

Agreed that where he is being played at the moment maybe doesn't play to his strengths. And perhaps that's why I think he flatters to deceive - I don't think his end product is all that. Obviously that will improve with experience, but at the moment I think we are in greater need of a more rounded player at Prem level.

I also don't think he has a great 'engine ' - without the ball he doesn't contribute as much as he could. He seems to be too top heavy physically.

He may be taking one for the team at the moment and playing out of position and clearly Roy thinks he's the best man for that job.

Anyway, I fully expect to be slated for my opinion, bring it on...

I agree with this

Some people will say he is still young which is true but at his age he should be better English talent is so far behind at this age look at the foreign players they have so much more about them

I think the next 3 years will show if he will succeed or just another one of those over hyped English talents

if he does get picked for England squad that is a complete joke he doesn't deserve the call up spending most time out injured.

It's not a bad shout actually. He is industrious, chips in with as many goals/assists as either Cabaye or Macca,(both of whom could be leaving as free agents) very durable (which would be a nice change) only just turned 28. Currently signed till 2021 on around 30 per so I expect Stoke will be looking for decent fee. He cost them 13 million so anything North of that probably a stumbling block

Failed to convince, those 3 words sum up his season in a nutshell,

A difficult one - not convinced, but a run in the team could bring out his best. Seems to me we should be trusting our own youth players and bringing them in - AWB an obvious example.
