So in terms of relative GDP they've taken us backwards. Not one for the "win" column.

Productivity is so poor due to a lack of investment by both business and government over a couple of decades. The low tax rate has done little to incentivise businesses to invest, and austerity has had a positively depressing effect on business confidence when it comes to long term capital spending decisions. The hollowing out of UK industry and manufacturing has been a big brake to our productivity. The problems started with Thatcher and have only been made worse since.

I guess it was the coalition government, but I was very much in favour of raising the personal allowance. All in all I don't recall ever having a government in power that I've felt is on our side though, not this one, not the coalition, not labour.
