Benteke. I know he's our only striker, but not ONE goal in six games? That's really disappointing

especially when you consider the megabucks we paid for him. i cannot see anybody wanting to buy him off us.

It’s Luca by a country mile. If he remains in the team, we will go down. He is lost for 60% of every game. His positional sense is woeful and the amount of times yesterday he is not showing for the ball slows everything down and makes other players look inefficient. I am really surprised more people have not picked up on it. I guess like the early days of Ben Watson when you get a fan club like that you just cruise through unnoticed. Any ball over 4 yards he either loses possession or can’t be controlled by our player. It’s more frustrating and damaging than 10 miisses by Benteke!

Gayle was good at coming off the bench when games opened up for whatever reason, or you went 2 up front. Also good at finishing loose. balls.

Whenever he started he was marked out of the game, never showed himself with his back to goal, never found a space or channel. Totally ineffective as a lone striker in the modern game when you need to be one.

That's why he's a good championship striker and not a good prem striker. Apparently he's not a good trainer and messes about like a school boy with fringe players that know they're not in the frame. Fine if you're doing the business regularly. Not if you aren't or can't.

He mostly played as a lone striker last season for Newcastle and was the best in the Championship, if you look at the number of minutes played and goals and assists provided: [Link]

Premier League teams regularly use strikers who weren't as good as him last year: Chris Wood, Glenn Murray, Tammy Abraham.

Good for Gayle that he can also play behind another striker, but he also played as center forward last year, this is all I wanted to say

We need him to do this.

Agree, looks a strongman in that clip but seems sheepish for us.

I have to agree, I was hoping he would be able to step into jedinaks boots, I was prepared to give him time to do this, but in my opinion he has been disappointing.

Don’t see this at all, think he’s been pretty decent, one of the few who want to play forward. Opinions I suppose. Don’t think Roy wants to break up the partnership with him and Cabaye though. However I’d like to see RLC given a go through the middle with Yohan.

I assumed it was some sort of troll. Milivojevic had a poor start to the season because de Boer pardewed him. Otherwise he's been solid. Different class to the likes of Ledley, Mutch, Puncheon, etc.

Totally agree. Thought he was our MOTM yesterday. What I like about him is he pushes up higher than Jedi when we have the ball, can intercept and recycle the ball when it's cleared and therefore keep up the pressure on the opposition. Maybe lacking a bit of confidence, as the whole team does, but don't understand how people can't see his class.

Read that again.

The players you mention have a 'football brain' that Gayle doesn't. They can also hold the ball up and bring people into play. He proved that with us in the prem. every cb pairing had him in their pocket in every first half. Name me any time he did anything in a first half?

Remember Taarabt who was like a world's best player in the championship but may as well sit out the prem?

Worth also pointing out that Wood, Murray and Abraham are able to lead the line physically - all of them are well over 6ft and strong, which makes them an entirely different type of threat to Gayle. To compare strikers purely on goals and assists in a lower division is pointless - if you're going to be a lone striker in the premier league, you need to be more than a decent goal scorer.

We all watched Gayle over quite a number of years, and matteo is grossly overstating his impact - a decent goal scorer who was entirely anonymous unless he was scoring - not even in the same bracket as Benteke.

Who lead Newcastle's line last year? Are you saying center backs in the Championship are easy dominate?

And why do you have to be a tall, imposing figure to lead the line? How many of those players still have success in today's football? We see Gabriel Jesus, Aguero and Firmino leading the line, we see Lacazette leading the line. Their teams are in the top 6. We saw Fabregas leading the line and Spain became World AND European champions. Some of the greatest strikers leading the attack are diminutive: Luis Suarez, Falcao, Werner.
Who bloody leads the line at Napoli if not Mertens?
Name me 5 strikers who look like Benteke and have the limited mobility he has and who are as successful as the ones I've listed above? You can't.

I'll name them for you: Lukaku, Ibrahimovic, Lewandowski, Dzeko. That's it. These are all the center forwards above 1,90 in all of Europe who are still very good. Playing an imobile, tall guy up front is a thing of the past.

Oh, if you're tall AND you have speed, like Kane, Vardy, Aubameyang or Cavani....that's another thing

That’s my point that he actually doesn’t keep the pressure on the opponents. Watch him closely in the next two games, we never pick up a second ball from a corner or set piece clearance. He never plays a forward incisive ball like Cabaye’s for the goal. There were times yesterday when he made Ward look uninventive because when Ward gets the ball back from RLC down the right at least 50% of the time Luca isn’t showing to get the ball back.
As is proven in the premiership this season, possession is one thing but what you do with it is totally another.
We don’t move the ball quickly enough from that part of the pitch which was the reason for our early season lack of goals.
With Wilf and RLC back you now rely on their brilliance to make attacks which puts a lot of pressure on them which to be fair they recently have been fantastic.
It’s a team game and Luca’s part of the pitch needs to start more sparks.
