They don't lug anything, they wheel bins with lids on (if the lid is open a fraction, they don't take it so no stink either). They do the recycling box on a separate week, and transfer that into a wheelie bin too, and they don't give a hoot about waiting traffic. You can sit there until it's convenient for them and that's that. You don't have the foggiest idea. I'm in the construction industry so early mornings, the cold and hard graft are par for the course. Actual hard graft, not the council equivalent of hard graft. We just want the bins done that's all, not a job most of us would join a queue for. It's not a competition to see who is Mr Universe.

So you have made it sound like you also work outside in the cold at 6am in winter for hours at a time long-term doing physically hard and unpleasant work. If that is the case then both the dustmen and you deserve a pat on the back and in the former's case....more money.

Just moved councils, and our new bin men are excellent - We don't have wheelie bins - only bags and recycling boxes, and its collected every week. Last week I'd not put everything at the foot of the drive, and they still came and picked it all up. That said, for minimum wage you're going to get people who generally don't give a s**t I guess. What surprised me most about our old cleaners was how much effort they put in for 7.25 an hour from the boss (less than minimum wage as they didn't get paid for travelling to and from jobs). If it's on the drive, it doesn't get touched. It has to be on the pavement, a foot away and it's staying put. A realistic working week for dustmen is approx 30 hours.

£7 is less than minimum wage, so no one will be on that. They will more than likely be on the living wage too, which is higher. That's not a dustman's job, they work for the councils not "future force" My bad. I was 50p out. You were right.
Refuse Loader positions available for an immediate start. As a Refuse Loader, you will be handling unsanitary waste, and you will be standing up all day in all weathers. This is a very physical job. Bin collections £7.50 an hour of you are 25 or over

It's subjective, the 'that I see' was a clue that it was, and I stand by it so not ludicrous at all. In your world maybe. But you don't live in mine so don't knee-jerk judge. Obviously if I were to to see the sewer cleaners of Mumbai every week then the dustmen would be usurped.

From the same advert earlier "Hours; Monday to Friday, 6.30am start until 'finish' each day (normally a 7.5 hour working day)" I make that around 37 hours.

Our old bin men, because we lived near a traffic light, wouldn't collect the bin if the lights were green. Its odd that I'm excited about the fact our bin men collect our rubbish, on a weekly basis, and are helpful. That's how far the 'outsourcing' of the bin services have got us. Used to be a hard work, that paid well (as I used to know a few 'tougher kids' who worked on the bins when I left school. Now it seems its not so much work, for f**k all money.

Dustmen was really the hardest thing you could think of, or do you have to see them? I would guess that it's an easier job in Devon than in a London borough too, less houses per round and therefore less bins. More time spent in the cart between the pickups too. You've never seen the people at the hospital that have to clean up bodily fluids? I think most people would rather move a bin from A to B than get hands on with a pile of vom, piss, s***, blood or a combination thereof.
