A forward player is far more of a necessity ....Cheik Diabate is by far the best, big and strong with a good record and scores goals, we have to move quickly otherwise he'll be snapped up by someone, can't understand why he's on a free!

Well unless someone has seen that within our youth ranks we have enough fire power should Benteke get injured then in all honesty it's a striker we should sign. Assuming we can only sign one player.

Someone did say that Freddie looked tasty when they saw him play lower leagues. Could this be the thinking?

I'm very much clutching at straws... seems bizarre.

Right backs we have Fosu-Mensah, Ward and possibly Tomkins can fill in. Right wing back Fosu-Mensah and Wan-Bissaka in development.

What if wards being judged to just not be up to it and likewise Tomkins? Unless I'm forgetting someone then really that does only leave Fosu-Mensah ?

Gut says that there thinking Ward is now a third back up option and need to have proper cover for Fosu-Mensah?

If that's the case I can kind of understand a bit of logic. Just.

A good shout, but why is he unattached as he is still under 30 and his goals per game ratio in the French top flight is excellent? Injury?

For those who haven't seen other thread.

Club site I counted 24 players listed over 21. The keeper wasn't on there. So that makes space for one. Only sensible with 1 striker and 1 keeper with Speroni probably not quick enough, it's only sensible we buy a right back to add to:

Mensah > Ward > Kelly.

We can then play 3-4-3 to Frank's heart content for 2 games, sub be gulf to prove his point, play a false number 9, and make 1 chance v 6 against. Happy days. And have 5 on the bench for rotation.

'Just use one of the utility players', 'or some youth' for 4 months.

Shaking my head to your posts on this thread remind me of hearing 'get stuck in, put a tackle in' when Benteke is near the opposition with the ball. No I'd rather he didn't put himself at any risk.

We had since releasing Campbell that we needed striker cover, not 2 weeks ago. Have you ever played for a team when all your forwards have been injured? Just relying on someone who's not a forward or just big to hold the ball up? The feeling of defeat before you even start is what you always remember.

I play exactly that role in my works team , no one volunteering to take over though!!

Think Mensah may well end up being the one filling in on other problematic positions. The guy is class and if he managed to show that up to now I would think we will enjoy having him in our midst this season.

Right backs should be, in order:

Mensah > Ward > Kelly.

Gold,
Pre-season Wardy seemed in danger of losing his spot but has actually been ever present in all 4 games.
Anyhow if we are adding a non contract signing it needs to be a striker.

Johan,

Did you see the tv studio appearance on Dutch tv Frank made for the Holland game? Talked about enjoying it and having dinner with parish last week. 'Family' was supposed to have been mentioned. Don't know whose family or if the BBS member made it all up.

If you did, maybe you could comment in one of the many Frank threads. Thanks.

If that means Mensah playing CB with Dann and ward RB until Tomkins or Sakho are available then fair enough. Once that happens I'd prefer Mensah at RB. If we're going to try a bit of pass and move with 4 at the back then Mensah is the better option IMO.

I did not, but will see if I can find it online , watch it back and judge what he says about us.

He has a style of speaking that also in his native Dutch is monotone and boring. No surprise his communications come under attack, though no one would have bothered had we been on 6 points of course.

So far I am afraid his tenure is exactly panning out as I was worriedly expecting.

At this stage after the window any free agent is not likely to be close to good enough for the Premier league.

That's probably why they are unattached free agents
