Edited by nickgusset (23 Aug 2017 12.54pm) Ha Yeah, that was a misunderstanding. I shouldn't take such offence at being called a female body part that I've spent so much of my adult life trying to get into....or even emerged from. We call the most wonderful of things the worse possible names.....there's probably some reason for that but I'm too dumb to think about it.

For a strange and bizarre part of history, google the Socialist Patients Collective (The SPK). Interestingly, this did have a therapeutic effect on the patients (largely because having something to 'fight against' that's responsible for your suffering is a form of therapy). Of course it was a disastrous idea, that actually got people killed... I don't think you can dismiss mental health entirely from social factors, and that capitalism can contribute to those, because there is a relationship between stress and mental health - and capitalism surely contributes to the production of stress in individuals. That said, I don't believe for a minute that any society would be free of stress. Communism for example might remove the stress that debt creates or poverty in someone, but in turn produces new stressors (such as say fear of the secret police). Its worth noting that Soviet 'mental health problems' were exceptionally low, and that's not because of their system or treatment, its because Psychiatrists were used to identify 'traitors to the party' and those who had 'incorrect think' - so people wouldn't have sought out psychiatrists (as often the treatment even if you were mentally ill could be 're-education' a euphemism for political prison camps. If you think mental health had a stigma in the UK, the soviets turned it into an art form.

Moderator Warning - If threads keep decending into personal spats that aren't related to the topic, or keep going off topic to focus on the poster, there will be yellow cards and red cards. Other people live here. Thread derailments are ok, but if I see posts where it just turns into the same people having a go at each other and ignoring the subject its going to be a yellow. Do it a second time and it'll be red.
