Proven to work with Spain, Barcelona and Ajax with 3 of the greatest teams that have existed. I'm not convinced we have the players like someone else has said if the board want to back the manager and this philosophy then fine but we need to spend. The opposition only needs to be well drilled and organised and our players look lost, how do you break a team down when you have puncheon passing from left to right then back to dann. Pulis would have a field day playing against us.

Watch arsenal play, ozil, Sanchez and Ramsay do not stop moving, constantly finding and creating space then watch our midfielders. We just ain't good enough our movement off the ball is terrible. Townsend and zaha hitting teams with pace down the wing and getting the ball into benteke, that's what works so why stop ?

Agree with what you're saying about the need for signings however FDB will need time to assess which players can/can't play the new system. We may not be able to get in everyone we need this season hence a transitional period but I'd expect a couple more before deadline day and again in January and we're not far off. It's a longterm approach. No need to get all panicky after one game. Patience is needed. Not blind Pardew patience but realistic time for what is a fairly large change and everyone gettin their knickers in a twist already needs to think of the bigger picture of what FDB and Parish are trying to do, not about reverting to type because we lost to Huddersfield which will ensure we never evolve as a club to a higher Prem level

Unfortunately I don't believe that FDB knows any other system. The 'total football' philosophy of high pressing, possession football is embedded in him from Ajax and he's going to persist with it until it works.

I don't think anyone was confident going into yesterday's game as we all know it's going to take time for it work and we're going to have to accept that and be patient. The return of Cabaye will help as him and RLC are both technically good on the ball.

As it stands we certainly need a GK who can use his feet and comand his area, another CB who can use his feet (Riedewald was pathetic in my opinion) and a RWB. Expect more dross vs Liverpool and Swansea and after that if no improvements and new signings it's time to get nervous.

It is too early to get really worried but he may persist and lose his job if it doesn't work.
I was unable to attend on Saturday but round pegs and squre holes spring to mind from what I have been told and read - and this was only against Huddersfield!
Time will tell but he won't get long in my opinion - Parish won't let this run fopr too long if it's going nowhere.
On the other hand the Players may adapt quickly but one would have hoped that they knew what to do before the start of the season - the Premier League is not the place for trial and error!

Also was obvious to see that Hennessey ain't comfortable at all playing out from the back but has been instructed not to hoof the ball, I really can't see the problem we've got benteke up top get the ball up to him and try and hit Huddersfield on the break instead of playing about with the ball and letting them all get back.

A major criticism of Benteke at Liverpool was they didn't get the ball to him early enough standing 20 yards out. Instead they passed and passed and passed, looking for the floor pass in the channel to someone else running through. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Maybe if he actually moved, he would get the ball more often....

Bit unfair to expect him to run all the way back to our 18 yard box.

I'm not panicking and more than prepared to give fdb more time and not judge him on one result .I just find it incredible how one of the supposedly best young managers can only play a certain style of football, he should be able to adapt and I'm not being funny but the least I'd expect is a bit of research, he should of watched every game last season and have a fair idea of what sort of squad he was inheriting. Just because you play possession based football it doesn't automatically make You this great team. Real Madrid are probably the best in the world at the moment and are happy enough playing counter attacking football.

How do you know that he didnt ?

Evidently when Bielsa took over at a club he watched a video of EVERY one of their games from the previous season and some he watched umpteen times.

I'm sure that FDB carried out a detailed analysis of our previous games to assess the squad.Let's not judge FDB after a single game.

Do you think he noticed Ward is struggling and Puncheon does nothing positive?

You'd hope so but he decided to go with 3-4-3 pretty much before he'd even started the job and had Ward at RWB whilst the whole fanbase knew it was an error.

Ward has been struggling for two years. It has largely been overlooked because of the problems on the left prior to January.

FDB made it clear he prefers 4-3-3, but thought 3-4-3 would get the best out of Zaha. He has also made it clear he expects players to know when to go long and when to pass short. It should not be that hard for them.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Couple of thoughts on this:- if he doesn't want Zaha to have to track back, then how about a 352 with Zaha as a wide forward/supporting striker, giving us an extra midfielder. TFM as RCB Townsend in front as wing back, Schlupp/PVA as LWB as now. Another mid would help us play out (when we can) and help us control the middle of the park, where we're not so good anyway....

I think having 3 up front hasn't worked particularly well, an extra mid would help the team way more.

Yes I'm thinking this as well. Gets people close to Benteke as well. Zaha and a midfielder, plus in addition to your ideas and observations we can have Luca shielding rather than not really knowing what to do.
