A battalion of women on the rag would make Attila and his Hunsx seem like Quakers.

A lot of the special forces work is in recon and intelligence gathering. Women tend to draw less attention and have an easier time moving around freely than men and also draw less suspicion, because they're women. Also when you consider the enemy will typically be male soldiers, infiltration by a woman is a lot easier. Its not really about size, its about actually being a woman.

How much is this just your opinion? Are there any generals calling for more women in recon and intelligence gathering? If they need them and women want to do it and can pass the tests then fine. Women have been spies for as long as there have been spies. Mata Hari and Violette Szabo (Carve Her Name with Pride) come to mind instantly. As for serving in combat, it was the women who wanted the job who forced the issue, not bleeding heart liberals. Edited by Ray in Houston (08 Aug 2017 5.30pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (08 Aug 2017 4.37pm) Its something I came across in a book on Delta Force - one of its officers was lamenting that they lacked female operatives due to the selection processes of the US military. I'm not saying that men can't do the role - its just that if you want to send someone in to place surveillance devices women tend to draw much less attention (which is why MI-5 and MI-6 have a large pool of female assets and agents). Women tend to be trusted more, and overlooked more than men when it comes to security. Plus you can do things like outfit things like prams with cameras and listening devices without standing out. Although having had a bit of a google it seems the UK Special Forces have formed a specific Special Recon Regiment that works alongside the SAS and SBS which does have an increasing number of women.

I met Andy McNabb when he came to do a signing session at our bookstore. Much smaller and less intimidating than you'd think (well they said it was Andy McNabb). Thing is, no matter how small you are, women generally can move around much more freely and openly than men can, especially in occupied territory. The SOE found this in France, the FRU in Northern Ireland plus people talk more openly to women (i.e. brag in a way they wouldn't do so openly with men). Women just make better spies than men, because of the inherent / institutional sexism in most nations. Its kind of harder for a bloke to flirt his way out of a risky situation.
