Let's hope the next player in is a RWB as other people have said, it's the only position we don't have a natural player for. Ward and Townsend aren't necessarily squad pegs but they're better in different positions.

Hopefully you're right with his box to box capabilities.

I agree with what you're saying about people joining in on opinions. It's happened with Jimmy Mac on HOL. One of our most consistent performers through thick and thin, gets injured, Sam comes in, Jimmy doesn't play regularly or have a regular role and doesn't get back to form and is deemed as poo. Really? I'd agree on accepting a good price for him if a replacement can be signed bearing in mind the 1 year left on his contract but to conclude he's suddenly not good enough or poo shows a lack of knowledge or a very poor memory. Edited by Rudi Hedman (30 Jul 2017 11.01pm) Same with Scott Dann. Good, well articulated debate btw lads, nice to read for once! Agree re Wardy, he does however need a bit of competition though imo, will keep him on his toes. I see him as the more defensive of both wing backs, all of pape, PVA and Schlupp will drive forward more. Guess a lop sided back 5 works? I'm not all that offay with the 352!

I don't know what is wrong with so many wanting a spending spree. In this market, We should save up more rather than go deeper into debt. I am more confident of Franks ability to find us points than even Big Sam Allardyce, though I agree we need an RWB. IMHO it's worth the risk rotating the youngsters and giving them a go till Crimbo? Since I feel they will be working their socks off to impress the new boss. Giving them EPL playing time is only going to increase their value both to the club on the field for themselves, and our future options in exchanges/loans. As for our first game against Huddersfield though, even with four new players I feel we will struggle as they have some quality loanees that are from Chelsky and ManC who helped them come up. So yes It will all be a struggle at the start, We cant really afford top quality, and only afford mere replacements with unwanted so called upgrades for millions and millions and millions. Its gonna be a bumby ride but Im a Palace fan thats well up for it.

I think FdB will be able to combine solid defence at the back with attacking talent going forward, but does need a coiuple of new additional players coming in to help

FdB has no experience of the PL, unlike Allardyce, so any "confidence" in his ability to "find more points" is guess worked based on nothing tangible whatsoever. We cannot rely on a procession of untested U23s to gain us enough points to keep us in the PL. We've had plenty of players who've "worked their socks off"; that is not, and never has been, a guarantee of success on the pitch. If de Boer has got us in the cack by Chrismas we won't be able to rely on him get us out of the drop zone in the second half of the season. If we struggle against Huddersfield that will be sufficient for a distant alarm bell to start sounding. If a team stands still in the PL, it goes backwards. In our fifth season we should be looking to improve our squad. What will cost us "millions and millions and millions" is if we were to be relegated. After this long in the PL, and even with the squad we have, it shouldn't be a "bumpy ride"; if it is it will be one of FdB's own making.

An interesting post Dave. FdB does have everything to prove in the PL, and if he gets it wrong we will certainly be in deep trouble (again)! So far as I can gather the person who wanted a change in playing style was Parish. Perhaps he had had enough of being deep in the doo do every year and wanted to try something different? Defensively, the squad does seem to have strengthened considerably since the January transfer window with Luka PVA etc coming in? Also the average age of the squad does need to come down given the nuimber of players in their late 20's and 30's. So I think FdB with Parish's backing is moving in the right direction. If 'rumours' are anything to go by, we are looking at further strengthening the defence through players like Chambers (although the rumour mill is remarkably inactive at the moment.) I am assuming there will be a flurry of additional transfer activity between now and the start of the season. IF a couple of additional good defensive players do come in, then personally I think we are in a reasonably solid position to do OK (ie above the bottom 5)
