The type of injury he sustained will make him slower. And speed is something he needed.
Poor sod looks like he will be lucky to make the premier again.
Big heavy players seem to suffer. Look at Sakho. Where is his fitness today?

conversely, he was never able to rely on speed to score goals, so it shouldn't make much difference

I disagree Saweet. The fact he was not quick and will definitely be slower after this injury effectively rules him out of a future at top level.
Poor bloke is destined to a drop of one or two leagues when he is recovered.
From Palace's position we should not be relying on Wickham to return as cover. We desperately need cover NOW.
Sad though it is to say, my opinion is CW career at the Palace is over.

I agree we need a better second choice striker as things look at present and I expect we will get someone in before the window closes. I'm not ruling out Wickham yet though as with the right rehab he can get his (limited) quickness and sharpness back. He's young enough to heal properly and the benefit is that the rest of his body has had a break which can actually prolong a career (so a physiotherapist told me once). We're not desperate yet. We'll be desperate if Benteke gets injured.

Yet everyone was complaining like mad when we sold Glen Murray who also didn't rely on speed and suffered the same injury

If only Wickham had a fraction of GM's nous and eye for goal we'd be laughing, but he's been a far inferior replacement.

According to Soccerbase :

GM - League Games / Goals : 315 / 164

CW - League Games / Goals : 121 / 40

Dont look like Connor will make the 25 but hes always gave me the impression that hes not that upset when hes out injured. I know this injury was a bad one but a lot of the times its calf strains etc and a two week recuperation for most players is a six week minimum for him

He showed plenty of nous and an eye for goal when he had a proper run in the team. He's more of a physical target, and his link up play was very good as well. He absolutely bullied Man Utd and Watford at Wembley.

Should also be pointed out the vast majority of Murray's games and goals came in lower divisions, and Wickham has had to play out wide a lot. He's also only just 24, so has plenty of time to recover and be a good Premier League player.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

Totally untrue. His injury record was very good before he joined us. He has just been unlucky

According to your soccerbase stats at 24 Murray had played 150 games scoring 43 goals, none of which at a higher level than league 2. Wickham at the same age has played 30 less games and is 3 goals shy all at Championship or higher. I'd say the argument about inferiority ends there.

Murray I would imagine has also played a lot more games for teams at the top of their division than CW who has spent the last few years plying his trade for us and Sunderland struggling in the lower reaches of the Prem.
While there is some cause and effect ambiguity there, generally speaking strikers score a lot more when their teams are flying high...Andy Johnson being a notable exception.

Let's forget the stats for a moment.

Are you seriously suggesting that CW is a better centre-forward than GM?

If you are then you are clueless about football.

Let me sum it up like this. It's a bloody good job we had GM's 30 league goals in 2012-13 rather than your man CW toiling away up front like the donkey he always has been and always will be.
