Teaching is very stressful and a high proportion of teachers end up with depression or burn-out or similar, compared to other professions (at least this is true in Germany). If you knew and spoke to teachers you'd know the trope about six weeks holiday does not a cushy job make. And teachers can only go on holiday when schools have broken up and during these periods the prices are highly inflated. No good holiday deals for teachers !

Does the 1% pay cap apply to people who are promoted?

In my day, one got the cane and strap "Six of the best and all that".One also got the ruler over knuckles.I have seen errant boys being pulled out of the classroom by their ears. None of that now and in many cases, children have NO respect for teachers and can get away with "Blue murder". I have heard the sentiments that it is not so much teaching now but crowd control.Of course there are many exceptions but my goodness it can be tough. I'm not in favour of physical punishment. I would not have stood for teachers hitting my children. However, there must be a system in place to deter students from unruly and disruptive behavior and parents should be more involved with that process. The trouble is that too many parents are total morons themselves.

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (06 Jul 2017 8.43am) Some parents are very supportive when their child is reported to them but some will adopt the view that it must be the school/teacher which is at fault as "My little Johnny is not like that ". I think in Spain and some far east countries (And probably many others), teachers are respected but alas in this country in the main they are not respected at all with the children knowing that any sanctions will not be punitive at all.

Teachers and other public sector workers have seen quite a significant pay cut in real terms over the last few years. Given that Number Ten can find a billion quid down the back of the sofa for Norn Iron, I wonder if the unions shouldn't take collective action to try and get better conditions. Are there any HOL members who would support such a course of action? I think that the amalgamation of NUT and ATL that starts in September will lead firstly to balloting members for industrial action of the kind not seen in recent years. Conditions of employment being the cause for strike action.

I have been recently reading that due to advances in technology, some jobs will be performed by robots in the near future. One therefore wonders whether teaching will be? A robot could teach a class, it's basically repeating the same information year after year and administer pre-programmed discipline as required. If students submitted their coursework online, the robot would then be able to mark it. Also, robot teachers would not be able to run away with under age girls to France or pass on their dubious political beliefs in the so-called name of 'progressive teaching'. The problem is that the you can put a good case together for both public and private sectors. Why should teachers be treated as special? Do they deserve a pay rise more than a council office administrator, a call centre worker or bank teller? Everyone is finding it harder and the implication that certain public servants deserve it more than others is ridiculous The IFS reported yesterday that even though there has been a drop in real terms for public sector employees, they still earn more than those in the private sector with comparable qualifications.

Edited by Willo (06 Jul 2017 9.52am) You never fully understand the minds of women, Willo. I found out yesterday that my wife is an Ed Sheeran fan. I was appalled. She wants to go to one of his concerts at Wembley next year. I would rather impale myself on pineapple than do that. Your wife and daughter could be secret Trot's or social justice warriors. They may well be espousing the virtues of non-binary, gender neutral politics when you aren't around.

I got embroiled in so many heated arguments with teachers over the years that my dear wife insisted I never attended any social events where partners were invited. She had enough of mt fits of pique and vesuvian eruptions at these functions.

I am in favour of removing the cap, or amending it to a larger % above current inflation. Government needs the Public sector on their side, and will fail if they don't reward them.
