None of Kai Kai, Williams or Boateng are good enough. All it takes is too look at how average they have been on loan to league 1 sides and you can see why they've never got their chance in the PL. You have to be good enough to earn it.

What's the point of us investing time and money to produce a player then sell them for £30m if we're lucky. How does that help the team?

If you're talking international level, I don't agree. Big progress has been made over the last few years and, as a result, we've done exceptionally well across the varying age groups this summer.

We lost the U17 European Championship final, won the Toulon tournament, won the U20 world cup and reached the U21 semi-finals. Both of the losses were on penalties. No other side can claim that level of success. We're also 2nd favourites for the U19 Euros so should do well in that.

Regarding the second highlighted quote, the point is that it is the only way we can possibly compete in the long term. Southampton and Tottenham have both enjoyed tremendous success in recent years on the back of developing young players that they have either bought from lower leagues/abroad or plucked from their academies. Whether they have permanently integrated them in their first team or sold them on for huge profits and subsequently used that money to strengthen again, they have grown stronger and stronger. It is exactly the model we should be looking to emulate.

That's a view shared by lots of people and I see your point.

In my view they don't have to come into the 1st XI and set the world on fire, some just need to be good enough to come in as cover for injuries and put in a half decent performance every now and then.

That way we can concentrate on buying one or two real quality players who can improve the starting team without needing to divert funds signing squad players.

A bit of first team exposure would probably boost the value of the youngsters too, so if they don't make it we can still get some cash when they move on....which again can then be spent on paying for quality players to take the club forward.

Our lack of youngsters coming through more or less coincides with our promotion to the Premiership. The pressure on all clubs to win is enormous. Playing an untried youngster is a massive risk. Kaikai has done very well on loan but is he ready to make the step up to the Prem? On sub appearances I would say its a difficult one to call but probably not.
I'm sure I am right in saying our academy gets more investment now than it ever has year on year. Problem is those youngsters have to be so much better than when we were in the Championship in order to get a chance. Under Frank I cannot see too much changing too soon. Yes he wants to bring kids through but his brief is to keep us well away from the relegation zone. Blooding youngsters when you need points and are under pressure to win is not smart.

Exactly! Good post

Genuine question. Is an Academy with the cost and hassle worth it? Only Southampton appear to use it correctly, the rest just play at it. Why not except that you cannot take the risk of playing younger players and buy players from the lower leagues? I would love our academy to produce even one player a year but it all seems miles away. I get the impression no one is really close to the first team, perhaps the odd game in the League Cup but are we kidding ourselves that things are going to change?

Refers to OP.

Good friend of mine was in the Palace academy some years ago. Same time as Zaha and co. He said Garry Issot is a prick he can't stand the dude.

What the coaching like strict or relaxed. I personally think he's been there too long and it's time for a total restructure.

Really can't see an academy product in the side next season. Apart from Wilf of course. Even if we don't produce for ourselves and make the odd million to a championship club.

Problem is, there's little to suggest they can do that? If you wanted someone to come in to be a squad player, you'd at least want them to be a notable performer in the Champ. None of our loanees have managed that so far.

Even the likes of Zaha and Williams came through under Simon Jordan tenure as chairman. The reality is our academy is not good enough, because if your good enough, your old enough. I'd love to be proved wrong but can you really see the likes of Williams getting in the side. When there's about 4 players ahead of him already and will be more if new recruits join. The perfect example last season, we have a left back problem with soaure accident. Why didn't we try an academy left back, couldn't of done worse than what ward, Kelly did in that position.

From what I've seen of Nya Kirby playing for England, he's good enough & confident enough. This season he'll turn 18. The question is how confident is the manager? I really hope FdB gives this lad a chance to show what he can do. He could be a star playmaker for us.

I'd play the youth in every cup game because it's VERY unlikely we're ever going to win it anyway and would keep our first team squad fresher for the league. I'd also play the majority of them in the league as soon as we're safe from relegation.
