They should all have a 24 gluey security guard on the ground floor ready to raise alarm to emergency services and all tenants.

Cost about £100k all in. Cost of lives. Priceless.

Ok, let me re-phrase for you. Who would pay the costs of £100k for the 24 hr security for the block??

Probably just built long before strict regulations. Compare these 1950s and '60s hollowly blocks with balconies and wind tunnels to the new style although this new cladding and aluminium rumour cause sounds inexcusable.

Some of these blocks near the river in south London have 24 hour manned security on the ground floor. If this one did a manual alarm could've been raised. This sh1t must worry every high rise council tenant around.

I think it was a 1970s block.

I used to visit this area when I worked for the Social, 25 years ago, and many of those tower blocks were death traps then.

1974 from what I understand. Clearly lessons should be learned from this, and standards, designs looked at once more for new builds and refurbs to prevent such an incident again...

I agree, the use being made of this for political propaganda purposes is a disgrace. The stuff being broadcast on Radio 5's Afternoon Edition has been particularly odious.

I wouldn't say it was propaganda, I'd say it's holding people to account. If Barwell sat on documents pertaining to health and safety in tower blocks for however many years, then he is accountable. Although until we know the official version of how the fire started, could it have been prevented if the housing minister did his f***ing job.

There's thousands of tower block residents all over the country s***ting themselves tonight I'd imagine.

Unfortunately, some of the undemocratic on here don't want those in charge of housing and the government to be accountable

Would wager there are hundreds if not thousands of buildings that have safety issues and reports on them have been ignored because of funding. They have spent a lot of money on that particular block and seems made it a death trap with the cladding material used.
RIP sad day for London.
