I find it funny that the OP, a self confessed homosexual, brought arses into the thread. you can't slag anyone else of when a thread starts so amusingly.
Cynic or realist? It's a fine line! |

Spurs call themselves yids = banter Brighton proudly the gay capital of the uk. I'm neither racist nor homophobic but at a football match I'll call Spurs yids and Brighton gayers (*) Hope that helps.

Nothing wrong with being gay, other than the fact that Brighton fans seem to take great offence at the implication. You don't tend to see much coverage of Millwall's chant of you take it up the Arse, because in their mind it rhymes with Pal-Arse. Because Brighton the city identifies itself as being the 'Gay Capital of the UK', it creates a juxtaposition between Brighton and Hove Albion FC and being gay. Same way that they sing 'you burned your own town' at Palace fans in reference to the London Riots etc. Homophobia differs from banter in the intention and malice inherent in the individual, and abuse is designed to rile up or incite. The chants aren't actually aimed at gay people, or inciting them, but at upsetting and aggravating Brighton and Hove Albion fans. I'm pretty sure that Palace fans for the most part don't really care about whether someone is gay - Its whether their Millwall, Brighton or Charlton.

Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

So treating being called "gay" as a derogatory statement itself is actually where the inherent homophobia lies. What we're really saying is that Brighton fans are massively homophobic. Also, "taking it up the bum" as a phrase that could apply to gay men, bisexual men, dirty women, straight men with a fetish. So even if that phrase was to be taken as an insult, it's not insulting a sexuality so much as a a sexual practice. Such as "You like 40 year old women" or "You like the reverse cowgirl but you're not that fussy". Granted, they wouldn't work so well as football chants.

After a week of stress all can go to the match and scream and unload and that includes gays being welcome to join in with "Hetro b******s!" or whatever. No one really gives a sh1t so please just let it be. Nail on the head. We get called Pikeys by them lot down the road. Fancy getting a few up for my documentary about racism in football? These things are said in jest. If they make you feel uncomfortable in any way, go and watch tennis maybe?
