Huh. It's not anti-wealth. The point is it's skiing, it's not really educational is it but it's authorised by the school so it must be ok. Yet when parents do that it's negligent. The point I'm making is if the school wanted to give them an "educational week away" then I might suggest the Breacon Beacons, in December, learning to catch your own food to survive would be educational in the event of the apocalypse. But that involves a cold tent and is probably less appealing. If the child's attendance is above 90% generally I would trust the parents to know the child and make the right call. Edited by robdave2k (06 Apr 2017 5.53pm) OK thanks for taking the time to expand your point. I just didn't get the mention of haves and have nots. I do take issue with the guy in the story's 90% as a threshold. That's one day a fortnight off school. Where I work that would be classed as 'part time'!

Next thing is we'll need parenting classes. And who'll pay for that ? some parents should be sterilised at birth, Edited by Forest Hillbilly (06 Apr 2017 6.49pm) Qualified, former, teacher chiming in: Whilst I agree that some kids are cursed with terrible parents, I'd argue that school leaderships' insistence on attendance has more to do with the schools' chances of hitting performance targets than an overwhelmingly altruistic desire to do the right thing for the kids.

So, in summary.... if you take your kids to Disneyland in term time, you get arrested. If you take your daughter to Somalia for a bit of FGM, you get a diversity award. And that ladies and gents is the difference between Minnie mouse and a mutilated minnie

Education is about stretching children. Disneyland is an experience which requires little input. On the other hand the daughter of Somalian Doctor Parents, wanting to follow in their footsteps, who has been accepted for medical school would have to be naughty, as no school would allow her to be away in term time assisting them to administer FGM.

Simple solution, just cancel their child benefit and require a refund of all benefit paid since the birth of the child.

The reason it's not done in half term is because it needs teachers to supervise the kids, and none of them would be interested in doing that in their own time. They prefer to have a jolly during working hours. Many teachers wouldn't have given a toss about kids missing school before league tables started. Now they're accountable it's got important all of a sudden. Many teachers have never been out of school, therefore they see school as the be all and end all to justify their existence. Having said all that, I always make sure I take my holidays during term time because I don't want a load of screaming brats running around ruining my holiday, whilst listening to their gobs***e mothers shouting at them.
