People around me in the Arthur yesterday were going nuts at Benteke for not constantly closing down in the second half. It was very clear that he was under instructions not to do it. Quite right too - firstly it would just be a total waste of energy as he would be running around on his own against 2/3 defenders. Secondly it would just allow them to easily play around him and create space further up the pitch. When the right opportunity came up/he had other players supporting the press he went for it. He is not especially quick, but he is most certainly not lazy. I know we paid a lot of money but I can't understand why so many people have taken against him so badly?

Benteke needs to take a look at some videos of Ian Rush who used to anticipate what defender would receive the ball from the GK and immediately shut him down. I heard Dean Saunders say on the radio the other day that he was regarded as also Liverpool's best defender because of this. On a positive note, if you look st CB's work rate yesterday it was an improvement but still a lot more work to do. Sorry, but comparing him to Rush is wrong. If you want try Zlatan or Berbatov. It's not his game and never will be, but he does far more of it than the two I just mentioned.

I thought Benteke was excellent yesterday but he is so isolated at times. Punch is our number 10 and as such our 2nd striker (lol) but is never close enough to Benteke to take advantage of his aerial power. I seriously doubt whether we will see a Puncheon goal this season

However, with the ball at his feet, he looked indecisive - okay he held the ball but was a tad ponderous and in the end laid it off to Townsend who blasted over. In fact he was holding the ball up waiting for support from Townsend, laid it off to him then moved to the far post but sadly Townsend opted to shoot instead of standing him up for him. Good play by Benteke.

Benteke will never be the type of forward who will close down full backs and run around like a headless chicken for 90 mins. Yesterday he was ok. I'd love to see him alongside another forward, in fact it is a great shame Wickham got injured when he did because two big lads up top seemed to trouble teams. At palace I've only ever seen AJ consistently scoring goals and closing down defenders. Often forwards 'work hard' to compensate for the fact they're actually not very good. Robson-Kanu is an example of this (damo ive jinxed it for next weekend). Benteke is a very good player. With better service he will score more. Edited by laddo (26 Feb 2017 8.35pm)

He has many skills which allow him to cause fear in other teams. This means that they have to allocate minders to him, allowing other team members to do the business. I hope he is saving himself to explode against teams from whom we do not expect to obtain points. I hope he does watch today's Kane and Alli show and decides to do better than them. COYP

We need more into him. What he does, with the service he gets, has been pretty impressive, but really its down to Puncheon, Townsend and Zaha to feed into him. He's a lone striker, in a team where the only injury free option is Campbell. I suspect he's been ordered not to chase down every defender and 'lost cause'. Last thing we need is him being injured and we need him to be fit for 95 minutes or so per game.
