question for the chaps in this thread: how would you rate Palace's lads in the 80's? I know we had a few mobs and the Nifty 50 were a good mob in their day apparently

We had a not bad firm, got a bit of recognition at one point i recall, always had a massive mob for charlton, qpr and luton, and always better than them, did like qprs tight firm thou from ladbroke grove, they were game but little numbers, had a go at man utd once or twice, we werent in same league as the top boys thou, millwall and west ham,,,they were the daddys and everyone knew it, but our biggest feat was running the north bank when they were top boys in london, not many can say that, probably none, maybe one or two, but not when they were top boys!

I know we had a few mobs and the Nifty 50 were a good mob in their day apparently Home and away I was there - just an on observer on the fringes - and what they lacked in numbers was made up for in spirit. Some other clubs' mobs were in their hundreds and had no second thoughts about going into any part of Selhurst park they fancied. Millwall was the only one that stood on The Holmesdale without having to windmill for it. At certain games - Loftus Road, The Goldstone - we did have massive numbers who partook as the normally peaceful Palace fan would for some reason take umbrage with the opposition and old bill Edited by Kermit8 (19 Jan 2017 2.20pm)

I can remember being squashed in the pens that day, Spurs under-estimated how many we would bring. Palace fans started climbing the fences to get over into the empty pen next to our fans and the OB finally opened it and that filled up rapidly. Can remember the fighting up and down the Seven sisters road after the game, pockets of Spurs hid in the back allys and ambushed a few of our mob and probably one of the biggest fights i ever see took place that day, what was probably only a minute seemed like ages as punches were thrown. Selhurst was aneast target because all our lads were in different mobs and split up. Outside was different though. Biggest mob inside Selhurst was against Pompey when they came on the pitch and were quickly put in their place by our lot in the mainstand, kicked off all over Thrornton Heath after too. Pompey had the whole of the Holmesdale that day.

Got a shock to see my toon mate, with two of his pals sitting on the floor! He said,,,thats him! Luckily for me, his mate, obviouslythe leader of the trio, said,,hes only a kid! I remember being pulled over in a lay-by by the old bill on the way down to the seaweed in the 80's, and after a car search, was told to remove the laces from my Dr Martin boots!!

Boys from Sth Norwood never got on with Addington, nor the boys from the Pond, South Croydon also tended to stand alone. Pity really cos when we did come together we showed heart against Weed being the obvious. Many memorable times, like when about 30 of us ran 100s of Liverpool where the police station now is at Norwood Junction (was a carpark then). Also many an ambush alone the path that runs along the side the track at Norwood Junction. Running man city when away fans were in the corner of the Holmesdale. Ambushing the weed at East Croydon. Getting a load of Brighton Scum of the South badges printed up, that made the back pages of the Evening Standard. Anyone remember, Silverback? The grey-haired police sergeant who thought Norwood Junction was his manor? Orrible b******. Happy days.

I know we had a few mobs and the Nifty 50 were a good mob in their day apparently I was in a bit of a minority in the 80's as I was a Selhurst boy born and bred and schooled. I always found most of our so called 'lads' used to antagonise the home fans but as soon as the going got tough, they conveniently disappeared. Leaving one with ones cock in ones hand.
Babs and Clean Willie were in love they said.... |
