And how long are we going to perpetuate this? Should I be offended by the sight of someone dressed as a Roman or a Norman or the Pope? They were all really mean to my ancestors. What?! Seriously? Please, are you deliberately trying to be obtuse? Either way I'll play along, so can you tell me when the act of dressing up as a Roman, or a Norman, or even the Pope was a statement of superiority over another race? Learn your history, or you'll forever remain an ignorant fool

Of course it does require you to actually click on the link and then read it. Yeah, I did. My answer is the same.

The Romans took Britons as slaves, the Normans oppressed the crap out of us and the Catholics, well I'm not even going there. My examples are designed to demonstrate that one could extend these kind of resentments on endlessly into the future. Where will it get us all? Allowing yourself to be offended by others who deliberately or inadvertently offend puts you in a position of weakness. You have allowed someone to effect you negatively. When you can say, I don't give a f***, then you are the strong one.

It is not the representation of historic figures that offends or even a history of slavery. The blackface does not represent either. It was/is a symbol of oppression and degradation of a race. It's a visual representation that the black man was/is inferior to the white man in every way and could not be accepted or tolerated in society as anything approaching an equal. And that the only acceptable representation of such was a white man degrading himself. That is what blackface means - and it is the historical understand that I ask you to understand, not the history of the USA. Would you say to a jew, that they are weak to find the swastika offensive? And that they should laugh at it? Maybe you think the families of the 96 families at Hillsborough should have just laughed at anyone who calls them thieving Scouse b******s? Personally I don't. I don't think racism, no matter how casual should ever go unchallenged.
