Did we need The Hobbit to be three (long) films, or the last chapters of Harry Potter and Hunger Games to be broken into two parts, or there to be more than zero Twilight films? Everyone is trying to repeat the success that Marvel has had with its"cinematic universe". DC Comics similarly tried but has failed (spectacularly) thus far. Disney is giving it a go and the jury's still out; I suspect the verdict will depend on Ep VIII more than the filler movies.

Nice touches on the special affects as well to include pilots from the death star assault.
This was reinforced by Red 5's slot becoming available, with the general carnage also helping to explain why a kid from nowhere was allowed to drop right into an X-Wing when the Death Star came calling. I wish they'd been able to put Biggs and Wedge into R1. They would've been in that battle too, and Wedge was the only other X-Wing pilot to make it to the end of ROJ. Maybe Wedge was another rookie like Luke, but Biggs had been with the rebels for a bit.

Is it really exploiting the public to make a decent film, that explores events in your other movies and expands on them and the setting. I'd be more concerned if it was 'just remaking the same film' each time. Just finished season 5 of the Clone Wars animated series and I must say that from Season 2 onwards its immense, and an ideal replacement for the poor prequel movies and for what is essentially 'a kids series' it visits a lot of dark and moral quandaries with a gravitas lacking from Ep 1-3

The actor who played Wedge Antillies turned down the role reprise for the Force Awakens, as he wasn't interested However the voice of Wedge Antillies can be heard in Rogue 1 apparently (a different actor, as more than one actor played Wedge in the original trilogy). So we do hear his voice

So we do hear his voice I didn't actually hear his voice but Senator Organa does say something along the lines of "With me Captain Antilles" when he is leaving so I think he is in there. It's the best Star Wars film since Empire. It's a bit dark and the digitised faces are a little off-putting (but given Peter Cushing's character was always going to be integral to the plot it was pretty impossible to avoid), but generally it is a very good film.

A different Antilles, and apparently no relation. Captain Antilles is the commander of the Tantive-IV who gets straight up murdered by Darth Vader at the start of Star Wars, when the Rebel 'Diplomatic' vessel is bordered. He is also the owner of R2-D2 and C3PO (which is why they're on the Tantive IV. I think you hear Wedge Antilles voice during the sound offs of the X-Wing Pilots. Originally posted by OknotOK

I think its a better film, from an objective stand point than Empire, but that I love Empire far more. Which isn't really a slight to either. Rogue 1 felt like a kind of war film set in the Rebellion, where you got to see life for those not blessed with being or having the privillage of being 'the heroes'

I went last night with my two teenage sons (19 and 17) to see this film. I have never been a Star Wars fan but my sons are totally into it so I went along hoping to enjoy it.

I've changed my mind, it's all stupid.

Especially given that everyone else seems to be related. I always thought they were related, and that Wedge was the owner of C3PO and R2D2, but apparently its a different bloke entirely (who gets strangled by Vader).

Although Disney do not own all the movie rights to Marvel characters - as a number are licenced out (such as Wolverine and the X-Men). Disney have done a pretty good job with the Star Wars franchise (although Lucas film had done well with the Drones, Clone War and Rebels series). No one really cares about the DC licence, but currently I believe that they have to use a different Flash for the movie than the TV series for the Justice League, due to copyright with CW.

After the Return of the Jedi, there was all manner of expanded universe material starting with the West End Games roleplaying game, which effectively kept interest alive. This also led to dozens of different comic books, novels, video games and all sorts that built on or into the Star Wars mythology. Arguably the Force Awakens / VIII and IX will not be as good as Heir to the Empire or a number of the post-star wars novel trilogies. So stand alone movie series really makes sense - There are whole eras of Comic books and Novels set in the star wars universe.
