Is it me or call me old fashioned! !!! But with all these ex footballers is it not strange that not one brought it to the attention of the authorities or parents .Would think at least one of them would have although I reliase it would have been tough .

The police have already admitted to not following up on at least one allegation.

Plus the level of publicity could destroy a career and likely it seems people tend to think they won't be believed (and typically aren't). I mean who wouldn't want the world of football to know they'd been repeatedly raped.

That some victims have been constrained in speaking out due to gagging orders is just astonishing in my opinion.

Gagging and non-disclosure agreements should not be applicable to civil cases where a crime has been committed.

The thing is , if true , what should chelskis punishment be? A fine is pointless to any premier league club as they will pay it without thinking. Dont forget that although its an historical case, it is the present regime that has allegedly tried to cover it up. Not many crimes out there worse than child abuse. Good shout for relegation as punishment imo.

Difficult to punish for crimes committed 20-30 years ago but as you say, if a current regime has paid hush money or tried to cover it up then a significant points deduction and a substantial fine is in order. However I do think that there is every chance that the FA will be limited, just because the rules won't change vet something as horrendous as this.

I didn't realise that, I thought he must've been paid off years ago.

I don't understand why Chelsea did that either, when no one at the club now (in terms of owners, board members, line managers etc) was involved in those days.

I think i read that the payment of 50 grand was made 2 years ago and the gagging order only lifted very recently, hence Gary Johnson going public. The Times asked every prem club if they had ever made any such payments or covered up/knew of historical sexual abuse. The amount that wouldnt comment is scary. For the record 2010 said that we are clean as far as they know.

They did it because they didn't want anything coming out which might harm their reputation or brand. This was (and still is in some places) common practice where an organisation sees damage limitation as more important than owning up to past or present failings.

This little chestnut always comes out in cases of historic abuse. As with Savile and other abusers, people DID come forward but were disbelieved or inquiries never went further.

Blaming victims for the failings of the system which was meant to protect them is a common but erroneous viewpoint.

I think Chelsea only cancelled the NDA after he went public anyway? Not sure of that though.

I just wonder why they would even think about paying it and helping to cover it up when no one at the club currently is culpable. I understand it's bad PR for the brand but it was an individual, and historic, employee who committed these crimes. Now the current owners and management are complicit and the PR damage will be far worse than it would had they gone public when told about it.

The timing isn't clear but looks like the details were leaked, Chelsea cancelled the NDA, and then he went public. But whether the leak was effectively him going public anyway?

Anyway I am utterly fed up with the victim blaming $hit that keeps getting peddled.
