How could the magnificent Jefferson Airplane morph into something as utterly ghastly as Starship (with pretty much the same lineup)? We Built This City is the song I hate the most in this world.

How could the magnificent Jefferson Airplane morph into something as utterly ghastly as Starship (with pretty much the same lineup)? Its a question I've asked myself many times. And there is an odd answer, the band Starship only featuress two member of Jefferson Starship and no founder members. Indeed, they could only use the name Jefferson or Airplane if the original Jefferson Airplane members agreed. As such, the only member of Starship who was in Jefferson Starship was Mickey Thomas who only joined Jefferson Starship in 1979 (effectively to replace Grace Slick). At this point no founders of Jefferson Airplane remained. Now Slick was a member of Starship and did sing 'we built this city' but Slick is not a founder member of Jefferson Airplane either (she replaced Signe Toly Anderson at the end of 1966 - who oddly died on the same day as bandmate Paul Kantner). As such I conclude there is no true relationship, other than by proxy of replacements, between the mighty Jefferson Airplane and Starship - on a technicality.

Quality bit of Googling there, Jamie. Late lunch break. Anything that protects the sanctity of Jefferson Airplane.
