Did Rooney play in Woy's last game in charge against Iceland?

Southgate was hardly going to say anything derogatory about any of our players after a game let alone the captain who had just received a special cap.

As for showing balls, well we'll have to disagree on that one. I think he was railroaded into playing Rooney v Malta for the reasons Stuk has outlined above. Clearly you disagree... I can live with that.

We don't really disagree on that. I think he is pandering to public opinion by dropping him. I don't think he risks anything really in terms of impact. I haven't seen a single commentary that suggests he is taking some massive risk dropping Rooney (although I have still seem plenty of words written about it, so I guess it is still a story).

If he believes Rooney is good enough to be captain (and if he didn't then he should have shown real balls and removed the captaincy straight away) then to show bravery he should continue to play him in the face of all the criticism. He should just say stuff you.

He just seems to be getting a lot of credit for dropping him that I don't think is really deserved. I believe pretty much any manager would have felt confident doing the same.

You seemed to suggest that playing in midfield and for an under-performing side were mitigating circumstances.

Is that not the case when playing in midfield for a truly awful team?

Barkley scored 8 and assisted 9, and Everton finished well below Man u. He doesn't start for his country and at present isn't even in the squad.

I suggested they are factors, which they
undeniably are.

Barkley did score 8 and assist 9 last season, but he was included in the England squad for the whole year as a result of it.

I still don't see how pointing out other internationals who played in underperforming teams supports your argument.

If you're basing your argument on his stats then Barkley should've been starting ahead of him, not watching the whole tournament from the bench.

You do know it's quite hard to pick a player in the prem with half decent stats, that isn't an international.

Deeney smashed Rooney's stats, is he more palatable for you to compare?

Long overdue. Should have taken the graceful exit after the Euro's.

Terrible against Malta, just slowed the play up or gave away the ball anytime he had possession. Hasn't had a decent game for England in years.

Shame- never achieved the incredible potential he had as a young player.

Time to give him the boot, concentrate on the next generation.

As Ive been telling anyone who wanted to listen for quite a few years .

You latched on to the stats point, not me.

The point I made, supported by the stats, is that Rooney is/was nowhere near as bad as people are making out - he's still comfortably an international standard footballer, and I'd far rather see him leading the team, than a bang average workhorse like Jordan Henderson.

Not as a midfielder he's not.

Because you brought them up, and they are pretty average at best. Moreso when you look at the team around him.

I'd rather see Henderson in midfield than Rooney playing between the midfield and the defence. If he stayed up top I'd have no problem with him but he's too impatient to do so.

Good thing Rooney wasn't there to slow down our play and give the ball away yesterday

Probably still the best outfield player we currently have, but that's not really saying much.

Problem isn't really one player, its the team and the whole ethos behind English football.

If Costa Rica can produce a team with world cup pedigree, and Wales can produce a team with Euro pedigree and even Iceland can produce a team that does better than England, why can't we.

Produce a team, not a celebrity list of the premiership. Look at the players they had access to and then compare it to the players we had.

Beating Malta 2-0 isn't winning, its a moral victory for the opposition.
