The fuss about it is due to the extremely low percentage of British players across the entire league.

Home grown players are important though and being British means that they almost certainly are. This is a football law.

Being an EU passport holding player is only important in terms of not needing work permits. This is an actual law.

Not for much longer, when we eventually exit the EU, it will effect football more than people realise. Any European player will soon require a work visa, so I expect have will have to be an International player to be allowed to work.

No British Passport a visa will be required. This will stop all the South Americans getting a Potuguese passport and being entitled to come here.

Willo, you're 64.... go enjoy life away from the computer mate. if my old man was on here with the rep you have (deserved or not) i would be disappointed. you seem a nice bloke, don't let this bog you down.

An interesting enough OP followed by pathetic, infantile dirge that is both boring to read and must be off-putting to would be posters.

On the point of our British players, I'd just like to add that I thought they played good football and probably had the among the highest possession since we've been in the PL. Great stuff.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

And of those nine British player how many do you think would be proud to read how we behave on here? You can include Damo in your answer.

(FFS there's children dying in Syria and none of that is Willo's fault!)

Arsenal had Ashley Cole and Ray Parlour played about a third of the games.

Chelsea had Joe Cole, Glen Johnson, Wayne Bridge, SWP and a few appearances by Scott Parker and Carlton Cole.

I actually forgot about Cashley, who I think was the most used player. But doesn't change the fact that the spine of that team was almost completely foreign.

For Chelsea, Johnson and Bridge played a dozen games in the league. Joe Cole played about half. Scott Parker made one start. I don't think SWP moved to Chelsea until the next season. Carlton Cole never played for the Mourinho side that year. He'd been sent off to Villa on loan. None of them vital to the spine of the team, except arguably Joe Cole.

Ferguson's side did well with some homegrown spine, but most of the title winning sides in the last years have not had or needed any.

Having said all that I can see the value nationally if all clubs promoted a stronger British/English core as it would promote development of English youth players. But that would require premier league teams being willing to reduce the quality of their teams (and potentially pay more to do so, as quality domestic players would demand even more of a premium).

No - it is you who is making allegations about me, claiming that I am "Pretentious" and the like which is total and utter hogwash.

I repeat - My interpretation of the word "Fielded" led to my retort that's all. To me "Fielded" was taking to the field of play and I am sure there are some who would understand where I am coming from.Based on my interpretation, I did feel there had been a "Faux Pas".
If mention had been made of "In the squad", that would have been different.

As for "Contradiction", I really don't know what you are on about. I have been unequivocal in my answer.
Anyhow, I have nothing more to add so keep on hurling brickbats and they will go unanswered.I'm NOT going to be like a stuck gramophone record nor going to impersonate someone in the "Dock".

My final message to you - As my ex-teacher wife would say "Must try harder".

mate just back down, your wrong in what your saying just back down and leave it. after all we are all palace fans! agree to disagree, just leave it there and move on

And Mourinho then took him to Chelsea.

They might be at more of a premium but then more of the money would then stay within Britain. At the moment our transfer spending is giving most of the money away to rival leagues.

True, and a good point. The deciding factor though is money, nationality has nothing to do with it really. The money of the premier league skews everything.

I suspect however, if we broke the Premier League down by individual nationalities that there are more British Players than any other nationality in the league.

It makes a more interesting story when its couched in terms of 'foreigners' as it fits a simple good - bad argument, without addressing the reason why the worlds best players tend to gravitate towards English football - TV Money (and its money that defines the game - notably the inequality it creates between teams and leagues).

The same I suspect isn't an issue in other British leagues (Welsh, Scottish, Irish and Northern Irish leagues). Even when you drop out of the premiership, then the number of non-national players drops dramatically.

The absurdity of the 'British Player rules' is that they're deliberate obfuscations of the real issue, TV money.

There are also very few British players who play outside the UK, likely for the same reason.

I agree but again that won't help motivate premier league clubs who would have to sign off on any changes at the moment. They don't want to give their rivals more money to buy better players that can then be used to beat them.

Premier League clubs are happy to be paying money overseas because it doesn't have an impact on their domestic rivals.

There will clearly be more British players than any other single nationality, but if it was broken down in to; players with a British Passport, players with an EU passport (non GB) and players with passports from anywhere else that the first two groups would be very close, if not more of the EU passport holders.

The problem with that is lots of people from outside the EU can get one via a grandparent and automatically get the right to work here, even if they or their parents have never visited the continent.

It's not foreigners bad and British good either, it's a case of only letting players come over who increase the talent pool, not simply because they're a cheaper option.

The lack of British players taking the opportunity to play abroad has always annoyed me. I wouldn't say it's because of money primarily, I would put it down to a lack of language skills and fear of change.

The Championship isn't short of foreigners as the next most attractive league in the British Isles, with the carrot of potentially making promotion of course helping. The other leagues couldn't keep hold of their own national players if the PL comes calling, never mind attracting quality foreign players to it.
