English goalkeeping is in a parlous state anyway if Joe Hart is the unchallenged No. 1. All you have to do is be an English goalie in a PL squad and you're in (except if you play for Palace).

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

This.

Wasn't sure why we bought him after he could not get into a QPR team that was relegated.
Must have a brilliant agent to not only get a deal to us but then another one to Southampton.
Play for England, now that is funny.

Did make me laugh.

A keeper we didn't rate as third choice, is third choice for England. Talk about limited options.

Some of us could see he had huge potential, shame the majority never game him a chance. Our loss, Southamptons gain.

Where as some of us could see him regularly fumble and cost us points.

Haha - makes me laugh how some people are coming out suggesting this call-up is proof of his talent.

1) He isn't young at all (above average age of a PL GK), so hardly should still be "potential".

2) How many clowns have played for England - loads and this is just a friendly - he won't get anywhere near the bench for a competitive game.

The guy really was terrible, he got incredibly lucky on numerous times making seriously basic errors.

I hope we had a bonus clause for an England call up/appearance - Parish will be pissing himself laughing.

If Alex McCarthy can play for England, so can I.

Baffling that people would seemingly rather have England's 4th/5th choice keeper than France's number 2.

Fraser Forster is a far superior keeper to McCarthy and will stay ahead of him at club and international level for the foreseeable future.

Fair play to him.

I am not sure I would have dropped him when we did but looked no better than Hennessy technically and his kicking is woeful.

I am sure he probably won't get a club game when Forster is fit

How bizarre would it be if Forster is gets fit within the international break and comes straight back in for Sotton?!

Not a Palace player.

Merge both the threads with the one in Football Talk mods.

Yes let's keep some perspective here. He has only just left Palace and as yet has done nothing at Southampton nor has he actually played for England.

If it was March next year and he'd been playing blinders for Saints and had become England no1 keeper then we'd be justified in questioning the decision to sell. But now?

Great post. Given his poor form, to sell him for £4m was a master stroke (a profit of £500k). Totally mystified how he can get an England call up, especially when he isn't even first choice keeper!!

He would still have got a call-up if he was still at our club and NOT first choice !
