There is part of me that agrees with Shearer's sentiments and that his international experience and fervour to prove a point should enable him to be considered for the role:

To quote Shearer......''We had players in the squad who didn't deserve to be there. Manchester City's winger Raheem Sterling hasn't performed. We can go on and on. Then there was Tottenham striker Harry Kane on corners... the list is endless.''

This is why i'd back Big Sam. He'd pick a squad based ON MERIT, NOT REPUTATION. Would he care if there was an outcry from the media/fans of the elite clubs? Would he f-ck.
Managerial changes are fine, but the mindset has never changed hence our continual p-ss poor results, decade after decade, playing our 'stars'. Time for a different approach as the usual one, as proven again, just doesn't work.

Anyway, well done Iceland, all the best in the next round

Time to move forward together.

The England team are a conundrum, it's not as simple as saying it's the players or it's the manager. The reality is whilst you shouldn't necessarily be doing as well as some fans think, you should be doing better than you are.

It's not about picking the best players, it's about picking the best team.

Look at Wales. We have three players of real international quality. Bale, Ramsey and Ashley Williams. Joe Allen is very good. The rest all have a job. To the uninitiated it often seems like that job is give the ball to Bale. If you watch how we play though, there is so much more to our game than that.

You need a manager who can do that.

A good team (sport or otherwise) is made up of individuals who know their role and where that fit's in the bigger picture. It really isn't more complicated than that.

Quite, and there is a lack of team players in the England side. Too many big names, wanting to be the big time Charlie and not enough players who are there to create and feed the game.

Last night was actually funny to watch, that's how bad it was, by 60 minutes, I just wanted Iceland to win because they deserved it - any idea of loyalty to the team had gone, they were that poor.

Arguably this is (and has been for some time) England's problem. They are stuck in limbo, still believing they are a footballing giant and so unwilling to adapt their game to acknowledge that actually we're a middle weight (sorry mixing my metaphors now).

England don't feel they are able to come and play 8 at the back as some teams do against them, which means they are unlikely to ever progress against the big teams. But they're also not technically good enough to consistently dominate sides who are more tactically astute.

Southgate I think will get the job. Not on merit, but because he's a yes man and part of the setup already.

Neville is nearly as culpable as Hodgson for the current debacle. And his record at Valencia (which I am pretty sure he only took as a job because the FA/Hodgson said if he got some experience he was a shoe in for the England role when Woy stepped aside) shows he doesn't at the moment have the ability to be the manager.

Pardew shouldn't get it.

Allardyce would just give me more reason to not care about the England side. In fact I might start actively supporting the other team. Although if anyone in any seriousness mentions Harry dodgy-as-fcuk Redknapp I might actually throttle them through the screen.

Statistically - as has already been noted - Cappello and SGE were amongst our very best managers. I am definitely not wedded to an English manager, but I suspect the FA are. Which means Southgate (Eddie Howe has no real top level experience and wouldn't be trusted with the stupidly massive egos of the underperforming cr@p that played yesterday)

P.S. is the manager really the problem? I think we need a shake up, higher up in the FA, as it doesn't seem to matter who's in charge, managers with considerable pedigree have failed and have done so for quite some time.

I can't remember an England side since Euro 96 (20 years ago) that were truly ever contenders to win a major competition. Happy to be corrected of course.

It was announced back in January that Greg Dyke wouldn't be carrying on :

The whole organisation needs reform and it's ironic that the man who wanted to bring in (at least some) reform is the one leaving.

They should open up all of the senior post in Soho square for election and let e.g. the 92 league chairmen (I'm open to an alternative) decide.

Gareth Southgate would be an absolutely abominable decision. He's a really s*** version of Roy Hodgson, who is also s***. Surely no one on this planet believes that would be a good idea?

I think it's a bit fishy that Pardiola hasn't signed his new contract.
