While we on the subject can anyone help me with this signed picture of the great man himself, I acquired the book about ten years ago, there is no other signed pictures in the book and I have seen other signatures that do not resemble this one but bearing in mind this could be one of his early signature's it could differ,

If you look at the Memorabilia Gallery on this site you will see the copy of Johnny's signature he gave me in 1990. That will confirm it for you.

When I first started going to Palace Johnny was in the team, he lived in wide way, mitcham, I was a paper boy at the time, and one day I put an autograph book through his letter box with a note to "please sign" and leave it under the milk bottles and I would pick it up in the morning. Well a week went by, and no sign of my autograph book, so eventually I plucked up the courage to knock on his door one lunchtime, his lovely wife came to the door, had a chat and then returned my autograph book, not only had he signed it but the whole of England v Rep of Ireland team were also in there!!! What a lovely man.

I think Johnny scored three or four in Palace's biggest ever win, 9 - 0 against Barrow in the fourth Division. I was there and it was pissing down.

He also scored a hatrick for England in their 4-3 win over Portugal in which the late great Eusebio also played, but I don't think it was raining .

Hat trick v Accrington S in a 9-2 win on 20th August 1960. 3 also for Alan Woan & 2 for Ron Heckman. Not sure about the precipitation!

Johnny has just scored for England U-23 v West Germany U-23, at White Hart Lane, March 1961. The ball is rebounding back of the stanchion. England won 4-1.

Thanks for that, there are many differences but also a number of similarities, so given that there is a possible 25 years + between these signatures i am happy i have the real thing, it shall no longer sit in darkness on my book shelf but join my other memoribilia in my study ? computer room.

My first match as a Palace fan was the 9-2 win against Accrington Stanley...I was 10 and it cost me 1/6d entrance. = to just over 7p in todays money.
Johnny Byrne scored 4 goals that day and was so obviously in a totally different class to everyone else.
Personally I would put him above any Palace player since and that includes the great Ian Wright. He was simply the best.
Having read the article I am gobsmacked. Obviously this was before Mr. Parish's time. But Steve...if you consider yourself a true Palace man...and I know you are, you must correct this injustice. Without Budgie Byrne in the early Sixties, Palace could never have progressed to a position from where you have so brilliantly taken them forward from in the last four years. Please reinstate Palace's all time hero... he was our foundation, the kick start from which we have never looked back and you know all about those.

Dave Sexton retired through injury in 1960 and the Accrington game was the first game of the 60/1 season but he just missed it. His last game was at Workington on 25th Feb 1960.

He may have been still on the staff come August 1960 - I'm not sure when he actually retired but the books say 1960.
