1. Our Welsh connection: Joniesta, Ledley, Hennessey. Maybe they've done a selling job. Swansea have a pretty big connection to Wales no? Indeed, but maybe he's best mates with Ledley. Of course, maybe not. But who knows? It's not beyond the realms of possibility. 2. London (isn't Swansea). He's Welsh, I doubt he has much against Wales. Actually, he was born in Wolverhampton! But, yes, London may be attractive as a 'new' lifestyle. It is for many... 3. Maybe he feels we now have the potential to go further than Swansea. Perhaps. But I doubt it. He's captain there too, remember Yes, he is. But that doesn't preclude wanting a new challenge. Many people want one last fresh start towards the end of their careers. 4. He's 30. This is probably his chance to cash in on one last big move. Would we really offer him more than Swansea? Maybe this whole connection is simply his agent pioneering for a contract increase? Wages have nothing to do with it. As I understand it, providing you don't ask for a transfer, the player gets about 10% of the transfer fee. Thus, an 8 million pound deal would put close to a million quid in Williams' pocket and he'd no doubt get a pay raise to to sweeten the deal too. 5. Wouldn't you be tempted by playing alongside Scott Dann and behind Cabaye and Jedi? There are worse prospects. Our squad is not better on paper than Swansea's. Agreed, but as I said it's a fresh challenge with an up and coming team that a lot of experts are now speaking highly of. Even if you're not a Palace supporter, you can see the appeal. 6. I imagine most players who aren't top four quality wouldn't mind playing behind our supporters and positive atmosphere they generate. That's true. But as the captain of a club he's spent his career at, I doubt Selhurst will be more 'special'. Again true. But if he feels it's time for a change our supporters are an appealing option. 7. Swansea are ahead of us now, but our ceiling is much higher than theirs. Err... Ok. Suppose this is implying we have more potential than Swansea due to our location? That's agreeable. It's unlikely he'd want to move, but it's not impossible. (Quoted from sydtheeagle). Edited by Fazil Bawlty (16 Jul 2015 9.11pm) I think you summed it up well. There are good reasons why he might not want to move, but it's not impossible.
Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God. |

But it hasn't happened yet so I don't see how you can say that? ( I agree the comment is stupid though!)

I think this is very much like the Dann situation. offer 8 mill and they will say do one. offer 12 and they may think twice. and money speaks...he may get one last heft pay day out of it.

As author of the stupid comment, if you look back you'll see I was responding to a post by Quijibo. If someone tells me what the irony emoticon is I'll use it next time I'm trying to be ironic. I'm happy to admit that I'm probably the least ITK poster on here. And, by the way,if we do get Williams I'll be delighted.

I rate Williams highly, but rather spend big money on the likes of Caulker, van Dijk and etc.

Definitely not Caulker. He was rubbish against us last season. Meant to have learnt off of Ferdinand. Too much for Williams as he is ageing: better than Caulker, though, and would be a good buy for less money.

IMO, I would go for Van Dijk but what do I know. In Pardew, I trust.

I know this seems a mash up of several threads, but the perfect buys for me would be Remy, Bamford (on loan with option in January), Van Dijk. Job done and top 10 (at least) sorted.

A far safer bet is James Chester.
