PALACE FOR EVER London 24 May 15 12.02pm | |
---|---|
I made my debut for watching in 1977 at 11 so I start from there for my best five. One thing I have to distinguish from is your best five from your favourite five. Lombardo From the present squad could Zaha, Bolasie, Dann, or Kelly be in there if they stay longer and add to their game. Maybe even Souaré especially if he develops into a creative midfield player.
The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |

I have been a Palace supporter since before the end of ww2 Like many others I liked Don Rogers but in truth he was inconsistent and carried injuries.Steve Kember was a good player but is best described as a grafter. Jacko is often mentioned because of his heroic displays but as a goalkeeper he was surpassed by Bill Glazier,Nigel Martyn and probably Roy Bailey I was a big fan of Jimmy Canon,Charlie Chase from many years back was another talented centre back...but in my opinion Eric Young was the best that we have had. Best defender was Kenny Sansom. Johnny Byrne was absolute class, ( many years back a manager was heard to say put him over the touchline before he starts taking the piss)Byrne was very influential in developing the forward skills of Geoff Hurst who was initially a wing half (midfield player) Wright has been the best out and out striker and the influence of Mark Bright on his game should never be ignored. Perhaps not the most gifted play but the way that Geoff Thomas drove the team forward was wonderful to watch. My Five are: What an excellent assessment. I've watched Palace for nearly as long as you and certainly would not argue with your first three. Byrne is head and shoulders above the rest. Have you read his brilliant biography by Brian Belton? The next two are difficult. I think I'd quarrel with Young and suggest the brilliant Ian Evans and possibly stalwart Jim Cannon. I would say that Thomas is there or thereabouts but if Andy Gray hadn't been such an idiot (bit part player?)at his best he was magnificent. Has anyone mentioned Cliff Holton who was imperious? Did you ever see Peter Simpson? (not wishing to be rude).
lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright. |
