Rams March On with 5-0 Defeat of Sandhurst
by Website Administrator

A run of home games was rounded off in style with a 5-0 win over Sandhurst Town, a defeat that sends them to the bottom of the table.

Rams March On with 5-0 Defeat of Sandhurst
The Rams were forced to make a couple of changes with Sampson Djimah and Louis Blake coming in for Taylor Maddock and Jack Higgins. The game started with both sides looking to settle but it was the home side who seemed to take control of the game. After 10 minutes they should have gone ahead with both Lee Jansen and Daniel Cumber hitting the bar in a goalmouth scramble.

Whilst the majority of possession and territorial advantage was with the Rams the breakthrough only came after 44 minutes. With Chris Head surging forward he was brought down just outside the area. Lee Jansen curled in a shot which the goalkeeper did well to save but he could only knock the ball in front of Louis Blake who made sure of the finish and give AFC Croydon Athletic the lead going into the interval.

The lead was doubled early in the second with an excellent piece of individual skill. Cumber sent in a high floating ball that Lee Jansen expertly chested down both creating space for himself and getting in behind the defence with the single touch. He made no mistake with the finish to score his 6th goal in 3 games.

Two became 3 on 58 minutes after good work from Louis Blake appeared to have set up Jansen again but he unselfishly rolled the ball into the path of Daniel Penfold who fired home. With the crowd still discussing Penfold’s strike he now turned provider as he set up Blake who flicked the ball home to make it 4-0.

antony williams took advantage of the scoreline to make some changes with Jordan James and Marcus Jones both coming on along with Nathaniel Jones at the back. Despite the changes it was still wave after wave of attack. With 10 minutes to go James used his pace down the right hand side and whipped in a perfect gross that was met by a diving Marcus Jones who scored on his debut to complete the 5-0 victory.

With four successive victories they now take their 7 game unbeaten run to play Club Langley FC in the quarter-Final of the London Senior Trophy next Saturday. With three crucial league fixtures following on immediately thereafter Williams is likely to make sure that any players with knocks have plenty of time to recover but he will also be looking to extend the unbeaten run.

Saturday 24th January, 1.30pm KO

London Trophy Quarter Final,

Club Langley v Croydon Athletic

AFC Croydon Athletic take their seven match unbeaten run to Club Langley FC on Saturday in the London Senior Trophy Quarter-Final.
This is the first time that the two sides have faced each other and the Rams are looking forward to making the short journey to Hawksbrook Lane in Beckenham for the game.

Club Langley FC play in the Kent County Football League and are currently sitting in 5th place in Division Three West. They are also on a good run of form having lost just once in their last six outings and that was a narrow defeat to runaway league leaders Johnson & Phillips. In that run of games they also secured an excellent 2-0 defeat of South Kilburn FC, which we know from past encounters is always a difficult place to go.

An eye will need to be kept on top scorer Richard Aidoo who has banged in 11 goals in both league and cup as well Gabriel Braimah whose 10 goals have all come in the league. Last time out they beat Orpington Reserves 3-0 to see them through to the Semi-Final of the West Kent Challenge Shield with Aidoo banging in 2 goals.

The Rams will be full of confidence having started 2015 with a flourish. Their 3 wins have seen 18 goals and just 1 against. Last Saturday’s defeat of Sandhurst Town further consolidated their position in 2nd place. The next three league games will see them the 3 sides who are in the top four positions and will almost certainly be crucial in the shake up at the end of the season. Manager Antony Williams will want to make sure he has a fully fit side for those encounters and may choose to rest those carrying knocks for this London Senior Trophy tie. However, winning is a good habit and will be looking to secure a good result to maintain the run.

Some rain is forecast overnight but this is expected to clear in the early hours of the morning and Beckenham will awake to sunshine for matchday. This rain will see temperatures stay well above freezing although it will still feel cold. A westerly breeze should make it feel somewhat colder than the 5 degrees that are forecast but the pitch is expected to be bathed in sunshine throughout.

Elsewhere in the Combined Counties League we will see Farleigh Rovers travel to Sandhurst Town and 3rd placed Worcester Park play host to Dorking. Bedfont & Feltham make the journey to Hampshire to take on Eversley & California and Banstead Town are also in Hampshire to play Alton Town. In other matches Cobham are at home to Sheerwater, CB Hounslow United take on Epsom Athletic and Chessington & Hook entertain Ash United at Chalky Lane.

Those coming to watch the Rams have only a short journey to make. Take the A222 Long Lane/Croydon Road out of Croydon and then turn right at Elmers End Green onto Upper Elmers End Road. Keep left before the Esso Garage staying on Upper Elmers End Road until the end and a quick right and left turn will take you into Hawksbrook Lane. Remember the game kicks off at 1.30pm and the game is played to a finish.
