Didn't we qualify via this route the last time we were in the Premier League?

I'm sure I remember us playing in the qualification rounds of a European competition (one of the versions before the Eurpoa League now). I think we played 1 or 2 games which were effectively treated as pre-season because they were early July.

I hope my memory hasn't played tricks with me !

InterToto Cup, which no longer exists I don't think?

wonderful - my local Norwegian team qualified through fair play a few years back - I still remember the match v. Barcelona!!!!!
And lets dream - Palace win the European league next season and then they are qualfied for the big one - the champions league!!!!
Finally we could get the place we lost in Europe when we finished third in the old first division - we lost the place because English teams were banned then,

Don't think that is totally correct. Liverpool had been banned and had finished above us in league so the second European Cup place should go to the third placed team - Palace. Well obviously that couldn't be allowed - who Outside of UK had heard of CPFC - so UEFA lifted Liveool's ban earlier than planned so they could qualify. If I'm proved wrong I apologise in advance!

This is indeed how I remember it Rob. Coppell called the FA Chocolate Soldiers for not standing up to UEFA, should have been given an extra slot if they were going to change the rules at the last moment. 1991.

Yes, a competition which the likes of AC Milan were happy to enter as a route to Europe but we as a relegated team were the highest placed team to bother entering. The arrogance in English football is unreal.

I think it was Samsunspor we played and lost home and away. New manager Terry Venables never bothered turning up.

I believe Bordeaux entered the competition at the early stages, and went on to win it a few years back.

I'm tough. I'm ambitious. I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a bitch, I'm OK with that.

Best to make sure we're able to stay in the PL and look at what is happening at Swansea this season since they've been playing in the Europa League (Uefa Cup sounds better).

Also one step at a time.

Swansea will still stay up and can say they've had a European run. Same goes for Stoke. A tougher season in the league yes, but ask any Swansea fan if it was worth it to see them beat Valencia away and I can guarantee you they will say yes.

Exactly. The fact that so many Palace fans would apparently turn down a (theoretical) crack at Europe is laughable.

I remember it slightly different, we had just got back our allowance of english teams back into europe(2) and liverpool still had a further 5 year ban for heysel, but it looked like Leeds were going to get the 2nd european slot by coming 3rd. The english FA felt they couldn't chance leeds fans back in europe so partitioned UEFA to reinstate liverpool's entry into the competition 5 weeks before the season finished.
Which was a f-cking liberty as we ended up beating Leeds to the 3rd spot.

As far as I remember we got invited into the intertoto cup for scoring the most goals in England in division 2. Was something like 102 goals (with Wright and Bright obviously). However, the answers on here seem to contradict that. Europa league would be good for our fringe players and a good laugh for supporters.
