I don't understand the big deal about the songs about Moyes daughter. From the Arthur, all I heard was: he f***ed Lauren Moyes If this is what we're talking about, I see no issue with this, seeing as it's true. there was a chant calling Lauren Moyes a slut.

Sorry - the singing songs about Moyes' daughter, Ron's Mum, people dying on the runway etc - every set of supporters sings a song that you wouldn't want your 5 year old to sing - it isn't right therefore - that's what I mean, but I accept that when I am at a footie match that I will hear songs like this, bad language etc. Personally though I would prefer not to hear them - plenty of good songs to be sung without trying to wind up your opposition - that will surely only make them try harder. Its all a bit hystrionic, not to say hypocritical, sure a man utd squad died in a plane crash, so what, it was over fifty years ago. Those same Man Utd fans in an England Germany game would be making RAF handgoggles and singing dambusters. Football is often deseprate for news or controversy to fuel it between games. Ala Pardews headbut, or some song about Wilf shagging Lauren Moyes. Fans love this kind of sh*t even when its directed against because they lack real meaning in their lives. It validates the experience of being a fan as meaningful or real. Its a pantomime for adults, in which insignifcant historical events get dredged up and turned into a cause for hate, revenge or to justify slights.

good points made by Jamiemartin that may explain why there is such a plethora of distasteful behaviour at football matches. One thing missing in his observations though is the humour behind it all. Its all just a wind-up and nothing to take too seriously. I've been told this and would love to believe it. But what if that behaviour was aimed at a person directly, if you'd had a relation on the crash aircraft or your daughter was being abused? I think that's the reason for the disgust of many. It's no so much the chanting etc., more the lack of understanding of the effect of the personal nature of it all. Makes those doing it seem not just lacking substance in their lives, but a bit shallow and thick.

I think its both, humourous and serious, I don't think the two can be truely seperated. Fans deliberately try to wind up players and opposition fans, but they don't actually care about what they sing about, as long as it works. You'll find ardent liberals questioning a players sexuality, very vocally, without ever really having a homophobic intent. And yet other fans insults or songs will really wind them up. Its more absurd than serious or humourous. Of course there are people who do personally suffer, but chances are they're few and far between, and likely they're less affected by 'the stupidity' of chants, than those not personally affected - they can simply write it off, they've arguably dealt with the much bigger issues and can react more objectively. Many gay fans for example, probably care less about homophobic whimsy songs, because in terms of what they've dealt with in life, its pretty low key. Football fans are a great microcosm of human psychology.

I agree, makes us look like every bad losers too as these chants invariably start when we are losing...

I don't quite believe what i'm reading on this forum since the game yesterday. What the hell has happened to the spirit and togetherness of everybody since that day at Wembley last year? Maybe it's the sudden overload of armchair supporters making an appearance since promotion to the premier league but c'mon people this isn't the palace way. Throwing bottles and coins and opposing players, singing about the managers daughter in such a derogatory fashion and 'fans' arguing with each other on this forum week in week out? This wasn't what our promotion was about, Some people seem to forget we are a community driven club from South London, Of course we were never expected to beat any of these big teams coming to 'our club', a win would be superb, but get realistic people... what kind of image does it portray on this club if people have to resort to throwing items at one of the biggest players in the world AND on live TV? This season was all about respect... respecting the players and teams who have earnt their place in the premier league, respecting our own team, management and owners and most importantly respecting each other. Although it was a small minority of people yesterday, As a palace supporter I was sickened to see and hear what was being thrown and sung. Time to respect what this club has given you as a supporter and give a little back in return by supporting this club how we did at Wembley in May. I with you on this. The whole episode yesterday was frankly embarrassing really spoilt the good work that the HF did with the display and the excellent atmosphere created by the majority of fans. Throwing things and calling a 19 year old girl a slut then in fighting makes us look ridiculous. I'm all for witty chants and giving players an earful but yesterday's antics were completely out of order and out of character, but that's my opinion which I share with the topic creator.

Come on ffs its a laugh. David Moyes earns enough money to buy little Lauren what she wants to overcome the grief of a chant she never heard. So what if its a bit abusive it is all part of the beautiful game. Have you lot never gone to Brighton and abused Brighton fans with homophobic abuse. That is our duty Also how many of you call Ron Noades mother a whore. When Millwall come and we abuse them with Jimmy Saville f***ing Alan Dunne. A majority of us do it and just because a few don't like it or get a wee bit sensitive is not gonna stop the majority of us taking our frustration from the week out on Northern Sluts or south coast bum bandits.
