But why Andrews? Edited by Cucking Funt (16 Jun 2013 9.36pm)
He relied upon his brother's guidance - which was valid in a number of the instances already pointed out. Andrews was not a good player but he always worked hard and presumably Dowie felt he needed someone he could rely on to simply put a shift in on the wing - win balls in the final third and put pressure on the defence just by harrying them. But honestly it does still seem difficult to reconcile. There were a number of bad buys, but there were quite a few good ones and he didn't seem to fit in any way.

I'm unsure but did we make a profit on any of his signings?

Only Boyce Johnson and, eventually, Routledge proved themselves to be of half decent Premiership quality. The rest were either relegation fodder or well overrated or just a hopeful shot in the dark.

hall leigertwood (who i rated extrememly highly) I believe that we signed "One size" for £1.5 mill and Paul Jewell bought him for Wigan for £3 Mill. Regards 'Leigertwood' I believe we signed him for £150,000 and Neil Warnock took him to Sheff Utd for £600,000. 'McAnuff' - I believe we signed him for £600,000 and Aidy Boothroyd took him to Watford for £1.75 mill rising to £2 Mill. 'Boyce' - Signed on a 'Free' and I believe Paul Jewell signed him for £1 Mill + a further £200,000 for appearances. Edited by Willo (17 Jun 2013 10.43am)

Well that's quite a good record based on profits. Charlton fans would argue with that but it would suggest he didn't do too badly.

I think if Dowie had not signed anybody that season we would have stayed up. I hope this time we play the lads that took us up.

Probably the only real error Dowie made consistantly during that season was not playing Freedman more. But we essentially were relegated on the basis of a phenominally bad piece of refereeing at Norwich in which the Referee and linos must have been the only people present not to have seen the most blatent handball on the line (Red card, penalty in a game we came back to draw 3-3). That single game had some of the most comical refereeing of all time. Obviously Dowie was planning for a career move closer to home (in Charlton) by signing a classic clown for the season. You couldn't fault the effort of Wayne Andrews, but he wasn't even good enough for league 1 let alone the top flight.

At the risk of saying something completely ridiculous, I'd say that two popular objections to Palace players are that they are either: A) Not 100% committed I think that for all of his faults, Andrews did not fail on either of these criteria. He failed in pretty much every other area though. Particularly anything that involved making contact with the football.
