And, unpalatable as it may seem, were it not for the US, we'd all be speaking German now.

In terms of military support, they were providing quite a bit even before they entered the war and, of course, the overwhelming majority of equipment and personnel that went over on D-Day was American as well. To say that we'd have actually lost the war without them is, at best, open to question but as they were also supplying the Soviet Union after December 1941, it could be argued that the German campaigns there may have turned out differently. Without American intervention, the war in the East could have gone either way - if the Germans had won (by no means a certainty), they'd have turned their attention in our direction and almost certainly have defeated us through blockades. Of course, if the Russians had won without American intervention, who's to say how far across Europe they's have advanced? All in all, the Americans entering the war was THE decisive factor so it is indeed reasonable to say that this country's fortunes would have been a lot different (and certainly worse) had they chosen to stay out.

Well, for a start: Britain would have starved without them. They provided us with food, oil, and equipment even before they joined the war. Their shipping kept this island nation going. They were attacking uboats before they started officially fighting, in order to help us. Furthermore, they supplied almost all of Russia's logistic equipment (lorries, jeeps etc). Without these Russia could not have moved their armies around. In addition, they supplied most of the aircraft and tanks used by the western Allies, as well as thousands for Russia. I could go on. Money, the Marshall Plan etc... Today, America is by far the largest aid donor on the planet. What they give, dwarfs what the whole of the European Union does. Yet so many people in Europe complain that America does not do enough. I would like to see Europeans pull their weight, before they start criticizing the USA for almost everything it does.

They wouldnt have beaten us, look.... ... I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
F*ck you, f*ck you very much!! |

1. The US and UK are not just the biggest arms dealers on the planet by a marginTheir combined exports account for more than the entire rest of the world. So it seems a little odd that they should be so concerned about corrupt and unstable regimes misusing weapons that we decide to arm them! 2. Yes, China and Russia dealt arms with Saddam Hussein but yes, so did the US. Beginning in 1983, the US was involved in eighty shipments of biological and chemical components, including strains of botulism toxin, anthrax, gangrene bacteria, West Nile fever virus, and Dengue fever virus. These shipments continued even after Iraq used chemical weapons against Iran in 1984. Later, in 1988 Iraq used the chemical weapons against the Kurds. 3. It may have also caught your eye at the end of last year that whilst the US was accusing the Iraqis of providing them with incomplete weapon declarations, they actually removed over 8000 pages of the 11 800 page report themselves. Why? Well accroding to an investigation carried out by Michael Niman: "The missing pages implicated twenty-four U.S.-based corporations and the successive Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr. administrations in connection with the illegal supplying of the Saddam Hussein government with myriad weapons of mass destruction and the training to use them." Groups documented in the original report that were supporting Iraq's weapons programs prior to Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait included: But perhaps most importantly, the missing pages contain information that could potentially make a case for war crimes against officials within the Reagan and the Bush Sr. administrations. This includes the current Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld — for his collaboration with Saddam Hussein leading up to the massacres of Iraqi Kurds and acting as liaison for U.S. military aid during the war between Iraq and Iran.

As regards America's poisoning of the planet: you again fall victim to lack of knowledge. America is the biggest user of energy per-capita. If we are talking of carbon-monoxide pollution alone, then America is the worst per-capita. However, if we take heavy metals then the former Soviet bloc and China are world leaders. America is not responsible for over half of the worlds pollutants. We in Europe are not exactly innocent either. Where do you think the last two hundred years of pollution damage has come from? Europe was industrialising before anywhere else. We've been chopping down and burning forests for thousands of years. So whatever, America's ills and there are a few my point remains that we in Europe should get our own house in order, and then point the finger. But not just at the USA.

2. Look at the independent figures. Russian 4bn, France 3bn, Germany 500m (including the deep underground storage bunkers, they did not tell Blix where they were), USA 300m and GB 30m. 3. Regarding, the viruses, I agree that Rumsfeld and co should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. What they did is despicable. But don't forget, that Iraqi weapons scientists were trained in Britain, USA, France, Germany and Russia. Germany provided the means to hide any weapons the Iraqis developed. The Russians trained the Iraqis in how to use the weapons and provided the means to deliver them. But of course they are not the USA, so they should not be criticized. Why do you think France, Germany and Russia were so opposed to the war? Does the fact that their companies were heavily involved in arms dealing with the regime, including some wmd, not bother you. It bothers me that overly concentrating on America's wrongs allows these other countries off the hook. Does it not follow that if America gave Iraq WMD, and we know it did, that it is morally incumbent on them to rectify the mistake?

Theres Terrorists and then theres Terrorists. First and foremost its good news that we have finally captured Saddam he deserves every bit of punishment he gets but here is my view on the whole thing. I will always see this war with Iraq as a bit of a phoney war it has nothing to do with the freedom of the Iraqi people it has nothing to do with the security of the world, The war on terror and it certainly has nothing to do with ''The freedom of america.'' America was clearly reeling from the sept 11 attacks and has so far ultimately failed in capturing Osama Bin Laden and bringing down the Al Qaida terror network which he supports. So the United States needed an old enemy someone who wouldnt back down, someone they could defeat easily and who else other than Saddam Hussein was there - He fits the bill perfectly notorious hater of the usa a nasty piece of work in his own right and stacks of history between him and bush senior so the scene was set Bush had decided if he was to win the next election the key to this was the so called Liberation of the Iraqi people and to bring down the butcher of baghdad. I was in the states when the Illegal invasion of Iraq started news reports would flood in on channels like Fox with the stars and stripes proudly displayed everywhere heroic music being played in the background as a reporter would give the detailing of the kit a us marine would be using all a bit of a commodity if you ask me but it seemed to work ironically even all the Mcdonalds in the usa had posters in the windows supporting the united states war on terror. Reports would flood in of another bomb going astray from its target so called american military experts hiding back in the usa would be interviewed about these the reaction always the same ''hell that doesnt even look like a crater one of our bombs would leave, Its gotta be an Iraqi trick'' All in all Saddam has been captured a defeated old man hiding in a hole. This will not stop the attacks going on in iraq More people will die and because of this war Al Qaida will be stronger than ever as america has taken its attention away from Osama. Its earnt american companies big money contracts at a time when america is sliding into recession This I feel will win Bush the next election this is the kind of victory I feel the american people were looking for and if a handful of his own people and thousands of Iraqi's had to be sentenced to death by him then so be it the blood of this war on both sides are on his hands. The question is who's next? One thing I dont understand is the So ''Called War on Terror''

Fair comment mate its hard to cover everything about this war on a messageboard but for me this is a simple answer for a simple man(Bush) its all about votes and its about keeping bush in the whitehouse nothing more he needed a big victory that would make news worldwide. Although heres a Question what news network spouts out more propaganda Fox News or Al Jazeera? Believe me fox is far worse.

Interestingly, the world's single largest polluter is actually the US military. It generates 750,000 tons of toxic waste material annually, more than the five largest chemical companies in the US combined. This pollution occurs globally as the US maintains bases in dozens countries. In the US there are 27,000 toxic hot spots on 8,500 military properties inside Washington's Fairchild Air Force Base is the number one producer of hazardous waste, generating over 13 million pounds of waste in 1997. Not only is the military emitting toxic material directly into the air and water, it's poisoning the land of nearby communities resulting in increased rates of cancer, kidney disease, increasing birth defects, low birth weight, and miscarriage. The military currently manages 25 million acres of land providing habitat for some 300 threatened or endangered species. Groups such as Defenders of Wildlife have sued the military for damage done to endangered animal populations by bomb tests. The testing of Low-Frequency Sonar technology is accused of having played a role in the stranding death of whales around the world. Rather than working to remedy these problems, the Pentagon claims that the burden of regulations is undercutting troop readiness. The Pentagon already operates military bases in and outside of the US as "federal reservations" which fall outside of normal regulation. Yet the DOD is seeking further exemptions in congress from the Migratory Bird Treaties Act, the Wildlife Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. The Pentagon now employs 10,000 people with an annual budget of 2 billion dollars to deal with the legalities that arise from the Military's toxic droppings. New Justice Department policies frustrate attempts by the public to obtain knowledge. In one case the U.S. Navy demanded $1500 for the release of documents related to compliance with environmental laws at the Trident nuclear submarine base in the Puget Sound. Other requests are simply not processed and attempts at legal countermeasures are thwarted. The Pentagon has also won reductions in military whistleblower protection laws. These measures disregard the Freedom of Information Act and obstruct the notion of a Democratic State.
