It's as good as a win because now the Tories will have to turn to Boris Johnson to lead the party. He was exposed together with Farage as lying to the electorate to push the brexit referendum through. There will be even more younger generation elegible to vote by that time (and even less older as that's nature) and another general election will be on the cards before brexit is anywhere near a done deal.

Indeed you are missing the point. Two months ago we all knew Labour was unelectable and heading for a serious bloody nose. Suddenly they are not far off being in a coalition of power. So something has changed. I can't say I have ever been a Corbyn fan but in this campaign he has looked quite sensible most of the time. And apart from Dianne Abbott, who somehow always comes across as bizarre and overly aggressive not to mention dubiously informed, the Labour machine worked well. So, big change. And given more time potentially they would have made it into power, let's face it they had less forewarning than the Tories of the election. Now what happens will be truly interesting. Is Corbyn becoming the face of a broader coalition of Labour politicians or will he use this improvement to bolster the extreme Left? Just maybe the former, it's certainly how he came across in the election debates. Edited by Mapletree (09 Jun 2017 7.29pm) Definitely the former. He clearly has ambitions to appeal across the board and wants to achieve a Labour government ASAP

Now that the results are virtually all in, what is evident is that c.55% of votes cast were in favour of rejecting austerity. That now is clear and unequivocal. 10 points clear. Theresa May now has no mandate for virtually anything but certainly no mandate for further cuts. This is certainly a victory for those who believe that such policies damage our economy and our vital public services. I'm disappointed Labour didn't win, but it would have been like Lazarus if they had and clearly Corbyn outperformed expectations enormously. Given many seats labour didn't win have gone from safe to marginal another election this year would provide a genuine opportunity for a labour victory and would allow Corbyn to be much more ambitious in targeting those now marginal seats. The DUP are a revolting group of people with a horrible record on women's rights and LGBT equality. Not to mention their links to paramilitary loyalist groups. Not surprised May has handed them the balance of power in what can only be described as a weak and desperate move. Unlike those nice, cuddly IRA people?

You've offered conjecture, yes, but everything I've just said addresses that.

Unlike those nice, cuddly IRA people? What relevance does that have to May getting into bed with the DUP? I'll give you a clue. None. She could have just gone for a minority government but realised the majority of people don't want her policies or her cuts so instead threw her lot in with the DUP. She's a liar and a hypocrite who got what she deserved for her hubris and disdain for the electorate.

Sorry Willo but you must be the only person to believe that. I have some sympathy for her regarding Brexit but She saw an opportunity and went for it. If she was any good it would have been the right decision and she would have won more seats if not the landslide but she came across as awful, hid away from the electorate and just kept repeating the same mantra. If there's not another General Election within the next 6 months I will eat my metaphoric hat So will I. Central Office read the polls along with Number 10 and saw an opportunity which they butchered with an inept campaign. There will be a no confidence vote that will be lost by the Tories and another election which will elect a Labour government either by a small majority or in a coalition with the SNP and/or the LibDems. The price will probably be another Euro referendum. One only has to look at the number of "safe" Tory seats that are now marginal throughout the country. At the outset of this election, pollsters noted that the Tories lead was in part due to gains made in the Northeast that, while substantial, would not be able to turn over some of the safest Labour seats. Add that to the absurd assumption that the UKIP vote would monolithically goto the Tories and it adds up to a total misreading of the political situation. The one place where they were right was Scotland. Otherwise, throughout England and Wales the Tories were caught with their trousers down. Should Kensington come in for Labour, as is being rumoured, even if it is a squeaker (one Scottish constituency was won by SNP by 2 votes), it will complete the snatch and grab raid successfully pulled off by Labour in their goal to become a viable party going forward.
