Zaha was 7 years ago. And that was in the championship. Not looking likely is it? If it was I think Parish would've hurried up with an academy and busted a gut to get Category 1 status. I'll be very happy if in ten years we have an academy churning out Prem players like Southampton does. Very very happy. That being said I don't doubt that someone will break through in the next few years. I don't get why everyone is so desperate for instant success. Is the club not moving in the right direction at a very good pace? Is the potential next appointment not going to benefit our academy? Does that mean we will have five superstars next year... no. But maybe it does mean we will have some sooner than we would have had if we'd gone for say dyche. Look at his track record, it's a fabulous appointment for the club at every level of our development. Really good article [Link] which gives insight in to his time at Ajax. Really worth a read.

Agreed. I've always maintained that it's this type of Palace fans mentality that helps hold the club back. A victim mentality. I've been talking about the academy. Not the results on the pitch or league we're in or position or profile of manager. Whenever I've heard 'Relegation? So be it', or people excusing Freedman's defend at all costs with in my opinion at the time, the best front players in the league, I've shared your opinion. But please don't confuse sensibility regarding producing a prem player from scratch with 'a victim mentality.' Frank can be a great manager, but not as so someone said, 'a magician' with the academy. Gonna take time. Quite a lot.

We should be going for Europe and looking to be an established top 8 team, said Charlton, Leeds, Blackburn, Bolton. I agree we should be positive about the appointment (if it happens) but need to be realistic. I don't see realism as negative.

You make a good point but for Frank to turn an academy player into a pro is going to take more years than he's likely to be around for. I'd love a manager to stick around for 5 years+ but the likelihood is 2-3 at the very most, hence the mention of talent that hasn't quite made it from big clubs or around Europe. That means to me work on the training pitch rather than over at the academy. I don't know why you've thrown in 'I don't get why everyone wants instant success.' I'm not expecting it from the academy and with regards the prem it's the way it is, just to survive on 40 points. In the football league there's 46 games. Plenty more time and room to risk.

I just read the article on the Guardian that he is going to be given some leeway in the transfer market. All sounds like good news. Assuming that it is all now resolved, it will be good to get back to business.

We shall see, but my point is I think our academy will now be more attractive having him at the helm of the senior team with a proven track record of bringing lots of players through. I can only see it as a positive for the club. now I'm not saying this will happen to us as we may not have good enough players. But at Ajax when he took over they were in a mess and he instantly brought young players through. It's this track record of him doing it himself which will attract better players at all age groups to our club. Hopefully like you've said, Steve takes it as an opportunity to upgrade the academy as much as possible. I suspect within one to three years we'll have produced at minimum one player. And hope it'll be more. But do also agree his main focus will be buying young 20 - 25 year olds for the first team.

One of the reasons I'm excited at the prospect of having FDB as manager is what he could start with our academy. He will arrive with an almost unrivalled insight (as both a young player and a manager) into one of the best academies in world football. Ok, it might take time, but having the blueprint available and planning around that would be an amazing start and should speed things up massively compared to us without him. We might not get a golden generation of talent come through at the same time but a regular flow of kids making it into the first team squad would be a huge step forward - imagine a Zaha/Moses/Clyne every few years or so. I am pretty sure SP would have seen this as a huge positive for FDB & a major factor in offering him the job in the first place.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |
