I would like to see it reformed but not elected. Oversight of the political process is best done by non politicians so I would like a chamber of independents who formed groups according to their areas of expertise and moved between them. There should be no political involvement in their appointment either but done by a standing commission who is appointed directly by the Monarch after advice from the Privy Council. Hereditary peers not involved at all. Members to be those who have achieved a universally approved success in a variety of different areas. People who can be trusted to scrutinise objectively. Edited by Wisbech Eagle (30 Dec 2022 3.31pm) Do such paragons of virtue even exist these days?

Edited by Wisbech Eagle (30 Dec 2022 3.31pm) Blimey Me and the Mrs came to this conclusion last week. Really don't want an elected body so need to find another way. Albeit Germany seems to manage. Hereditary peers are definitely not the way. They do all they can to prevent change in areas such as land reform, where change is so desperately needed, inheritance rights and offshore tax havens (see the whole of Scotland for a good example). They are simply a means to perpetuate their families' advantages and are so far from being representative that it's laughable. We are supposed to be a democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

“He may turn out to be bad for the country, but he’s good for trade.” Widespread opinion on Boris Johnson at the 2019 election. Democracy alas, is imperfect the voters have approved the serial disaster trail of the tories and who knows, they may even continue.

Widespread opinion according to who?
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I pity the MP, an hour of her life wasted. Why would anyone mention meeting someone whose view on the topic under discussion is not known.

Rather than just fire off another of your obsessive rants in my direction why don’t you read the post I responded to! Then perhaps you might understand why she was mentioned. She is helping me sort out an issue caused by Mr Johnson early in his time in No 10, so far from a waste of her time. She is doing her job.
