According to the Independent today brexit will wipe 45 billions this year alone, there really is no alternative for the UK but massive borrowing. Brexit is additional to the pandemic economic woes other countries will suffer, it is entirely self-inflicted and only a misguided fool would think otherwise.

Brexit offers the UK far more flexibility in how it reacts, as we have already seen evidenced. I agree that it presents challenges but being outside the EU will offer us far more flexibility in terms of how we react that if were still in bondage to it.

When you owe 2 trillion a few billion hardly matters. As long as you can service the debt.

All not well in the Garden of Eden! Still no benefits being seen by having left, apparently

The vaccination programme is great but it is going to make our problems with the EU even worse. Bumpy few months ahead. Gove needs to step up to the plate. Prove his credentials now as a war-time Consigliere. This s*** with the EU is about to get very, very dirty. Been reading around the edges of all of this and it is clear that Europe is in a lot of trouble at the moment. Starting a trade war with the UK, before the deal is even ratified, is a textbook approach to diverting attention from internal woes. Interesting to see what is going on in Italy at the moment. Still not quite understanding why Salvani has U-turned and backed Draghi to form the new government. Wheels within wheels me thinks. Still could also be a sign of a political maturity.

Agreed, quite a sensible view of the difficulties the organisation faces. For some states, and I include former member the UK, the commission is a convenient pinata to blame everything on. But it doesn't help itself by it's recent actions and not just article 16. They caved in to Hungary about the EU funding now regardless of what you think of the Oban government they bottled it. Then again those supporters of the EU constantly derided Brexiteers claim that the EU overrides national sovereignty / interests and yet that is exactly what the Commission did by enacting article 16 without even bothering to make a courtesy call to the ROI government. I am amazed that the people of the country did not make more of a fuss over that. Anyway own goal for the EU and A big I told you so for those opposed to the EU. As the for the EU Parliament well as always it just gets ignored. I suspect that when the dust settles on the current issues France and Germany will propose further reforms which will actually mean further centralisation of power to the Eurocrats.

Brexit: as half its sales are wiped out, silk firm joins exodus to Europe. This is the reality of brexit, our jobs being exported to the EU so they can trade competitively. The only real, not fantasy 'Liz Truss' trade deal that the UK actually has, is this one with the EU. And it is an economic and political disaster for us. Edited by steeleye20 (14 Feb 2021 11.38am)
