With Cahill back we were even MORE defensive against Brighton than in any of the previous games. Our last two games have seen us play anti-football NOT defensive football. Furthermore, last season when we had both Cahill and Tomkins paired at the back, Roy still played 2 or even 3 defensive midfielders in front of them. Sorry, but I don't find your argument has any merit. Ah, it's not just me then. I think Cahill is one of the reasons we are so defensive - he's so slow he has to sit deep, thus dragging the rest of the team back with him. Not particularly good at coming out with the ball or passing, and because of the lack of pace easy to close down.

Really curious about team selection on Craven Cottage. Would like to see Eze and Riedewald playing from start, keep Batman hovering around and inside their box. No ultra-defensive set-up once again, please. Another performance like the two previous ones and the manager will be gone by next week!

Hodsgon has been entrusted with an extended contract, the season is in his infancy we haven't lost all games and getting cut adrift from the pack. I re-iterate, Hodgson will be with us for the foreseeable future.Should we secure survival and he wishes to continue for another season, there is every chance his contract will be extended yet again.I stress this is a personal view and not something I have heard !!

Not entirely true Willo. Don't forget that football is a fickle game, particularly for managers. I suspect the odd question was raised at our performances at the end of last season. A continuation, a bad run now, and all bets are off. Plus it was clear we were looking at Dyche. I don't see any reason we were except that we know Roy will go sooner or later.

On the basis that Hodgson won’t change his approach ( he could justifiably argue why should he?) I would like to see what another manager could get out of this group of players.

So, Cahill comes back from being sidelined for 4 months with a hamstring injury to play alongside a player he has never partnered in a competitive match before and you think playing defensively with defensive mids covering for them was the wrong tactic and we should have been playing for box to box offence and all out domination - against our greatest rivals? Maybe playing FIFA mate but the realpolitik ain't so. Originally posted by doombear

Totally agree. During these uncertain times Roy’s number one objective is to keep us in the league. That’s it. If he does that then I reckon an offer of another year will be on the table. We tried playing passing football for 3 games. Didn’t work. Do you remember that 0-3 home defeat by world beaters, Huddersfield. Roy had to come in and save us.

And if we had scored one of our chances at burnley fdb may still be here and we may be playing a different style. If your aunt and all that.

Very true and at the end of the day points are all that matters to the board. After 5 games gone we are sitting on the same points as Leeds and have more than Brighton. So Roy can argue his case very simply if asked to justify why he doesn’t play like Bielsa or Potter.
