The good of the country, is not always the same as what is good for the people of that Country. Latest example is the austerity measures, the individual will think they are crap I know I do, but it has to happen for the good of the countries economy as a whole. We simply could not have gone on as we were, oh and on the subject of money, you know that rebate we still get from Europe who was Champion for that cause? Ted heath? Tony Benn? Tony Blair even…..not effin likely. I think once governments separate the good of the country from what is good for the people of the country they have essentially crossed a dangerous line into the 'greater good'. Whilst a section of society were accumulating great wealth, she could have raised high end income taxes to rejuvenate the areas that suffered as a result of closed mines and industry (which is what Hessletine wanted to do). In fact she didn't she cut public spending in order to pay for tax cuts, and promoted a deliberate policy that increased disparity, and promoted policys that could only result in greater suffering. Having broken the back of the unions, she was remorseless for its members that were left broke, unemployed in areas devastated by rampant unemployment.

If you didnt know who she was but saw the list of 'anti's' getting their two penneth in over her corpse then you would have a natural instinct to be on her side purely because of the odious collection lining up I ask - Where does it come from, this vitriloic loathing? Anti-Thatcherites tell you that it’s because she closed down the old industries. (She didn’t, of course, she simply stopped obliging everyone else to support them.) Yet it must surely be patently obvious by now that nothing would have kept the dockyards and coalmines and steel mills open. A similar process of de-industrialisation has unfolded in every other Western European country, and the only parties that still talk of “reviving our manufacturing base” are Respect, the Scottish Socialists and the BNP !!!! RIP Willo

Tis just a ruse by the Tories to cut public services.
Let me tell you Nick for a teacher you know fcuk all about History, the Americans bailed us out during the War, and after. And please don't refer to me as a mug just because I chose to believe in real life terms, rather than idealogical bullsh1t you swallow.

Ouch. I remember the era well, its the era I grew up in, being born in 1971. I remember the Poll Tax, the Miners strike, the selling off of council homes, the steep rise in homelessness following care in the community, the 'crack down' on youth of acid house, Clause 28*, housing booms, recessions, The handover of Hong Kong, NHS waiting lists, mass privitisation, the falklands conflict, the massive unemployment that was a harrowing of the north, wales and scotland. I remember going to university in Sheffield in 1995 and it still having 25% unemployment and then there was Pinochet (and of course the stories of collusion that have since come out regarding loyalist terrorists, the hunger strikers, Liverpool council, Toxteth, Brixton, vCJD in Beef, educational reforms and the Yuppy boom (loads of money). They were interesting times. But in her defence, she got it right on AIDS and the Falklands, whilst the YTS was probably a good idea for the most part. Probably the greatest achievement was the response to AIDS. * I wouldn't call her a homophobe - she voted on the liberalisation of homosexuality.
I thought that ravers then were allowed to get on with it as most were off there tits and not causing a nuisance until the rise of ragga jungle.

I can fully understand that those who spent the 80s in the coalfields, shipyards and industrial 'North' are unlikely to remember the great lady with much affection but one suspects that many of them will be appalled by the crude and sheer tastleless comments of those of the left. I have NO time whatsoever for the likes of Livingstone, Scargill etc but if they passed away I would not stoop to the level of those shameful reprobates who are rejoicing in the death of Baroness Thatcher.Utterly repulsive and repugnant.

When my mum dies I will be paying for her funeral. As many will be doing for our parents. So How comes the muli-millionaires Mark and Carol are not paying for their mum but relying on the state instead. Would mummy approve? You bet she would.
