How even acknowledging Corbyn's rise must stick in your craw. It's hilarious. I've had a quick read of this thread, the EU one and the UKIP one. Quite interesting to see recent history through the witterings of us lot. (Will any of them make gold talk?) Interesting to see some wildly innacurate predictions and assertations too. I wouldn't say its acknowledging him at all. As for having a quick read of the UKIP, EU & Corbyn thread. You obviously have too much time on your hands maybe finish off fixing your taps in the kitchen?

Who knows what the future will bring. Another financial crash could well see pressure for an alternative to a failed capitalist system. In the event of financial disaster the people would want to rescue their free health care, education income support etc. which socialism has brought. The conservative manifesto in 1945 had very similar national insurance proposals and almost identical NHS proposals.
We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

Just had to laugh. Supporters of Corbyn - the chap who in his pursuit of "La-la-land" and fantasy economics promised to spend much MORE than is spent at present.

No but he was invited to speak by the bearded millionaire farmer who presumably shares his views. Having paid £300 for a ticket or whatever it is, if your not a Corbyn fan should you have to listen to Eavis's views? It's not a Labour Party conference. In the interest of balance maybe he should have invited Sturgeon, May, Nuttal, Lucas, someone from the lib dems etc. I'd be pissed off having paid that money to have to see someone I didn't vote for given such a massive platform and be forced to listen to them. At least you can turn off question time if they're annoying you!

In actual fact, Sir Nicholas Macpherson who was Permanent Secretary at the treasury from 2005 to 2016 said "Britain never experienced austerity" and this from a man who was in charge of our most important financial institution for 11 years. Anyway, time to get off my 'Soapbox' now and concentrate on the football debates.Don't want to bring on hypertension. Edited by Willo (25 Jun 2017 8.30am)

Im sure Sir Nicholas Macpherson knows far more about what went on than you or I. The fact is that Osborne never actually made the cuts that he promised or anticipated. At the end of the day the 'Left' are bellowing out for an end to cuts that never went as far as was expected or delivered. Edited by Willo (25 Jun 2017 8.51am) Willo I am not one to debate politics and I am not a "leftie" however having recently retired from being in the public sector for 43 years, believe me GO wielded the axe big time. For the last 6 years my pay did not increase and in real terms decreased, the Dept I worked for, which you would think, should have been safeguarded was decimated by staff reductions and staff resigning due to poor working conditions. I am sure MacPherson knows more than me but it is a shame his ilk do not talk to staff to find out the truth. Rant over back to the football

Rant over back to the football Sir Nicholas Macpherson has not advocated that there were no "Cuts" but pointed to gross public debt as a proportion of national income and concluded "Britain never experienced austerity". He actually noted that we differ from other nations such as Ireland which reduced it's debt from 86% to 75% of national income over the same period and that Spain was another nation that really did reduce it's spending. Yes me too off my "Soapbox" now and will concentrate on the football threads !
