Depends on how well those jobs pay. New labour created a lot of jobs. Its just they were low paid service McJobs. Its no good for society to have people stuck in dead end jobs with subsistence wages and next to no prospects.
That should be permanently on the mind of the relevant ministers. You would think that investment in science and information technology would be high on that agenda. We certainly can't compete in manufacturing against the globalized world.

I think the Tories really hurt themselves with these kind of attitudes. Think about it Wilo. You say three percent...well the actual last figure I saw was 910,000 people in the Uk on zero hours. You say just say three percent....But think about it... when you drill down where that three percent come from...how many of them are doing ok? You can take out the higher and middle class straight away. That percentage those three percent are mostly coming from a set segment of society. The young and working class. Now that three percent actually becomes a large percent for that type of workforce. This election has shown just by ignoring the traditional working class Tory and allowing their standards of living to continually go down the Tories are going to allow in the far left. The number of working age working class Tories continues to go down and down. I think zero hours needs looking at....I think it needed looking at years ago. The 'I'm alright Jack' element that just thinks the Tories can just look after the greys and that this will win elections need to reconsider. Good to have you back - the rational, logical and broader picture-minded Stirling. It's been quite a while.

The pace of growth of hyper-flexible "zero-hours contracts", which do not guarantee workers a minimum amount of work, slowed markedly in the second half of 2016. The zero-hours "juggernaut" (as the 'Left' see it) is showing signs of slowing down, with barely any increase during the second half of 2016, according to Laura Gardiner, a senior policy analyst at the 'Resolution Foundation' think-tank. This slowdown is likely due to a strong jobs market meaning that job hunters now have more options available than taking a contract without guaranteed hours, firms being reluctant to be associated with using zero-hours contracts following the bad press received by firms like 'Sports Direct, and the high profile of these contracts meaning there is no backlog of people reporting being on one artificially boosting numbers. At the end of the day we have the lowest employment rate since 1975. Edited by Willo (17 Jun 2017 11.10pm)

Good to have you back - the rational, logical and broader picture-minded Stirling. It's been quite a while. The Tories stand for things I believe in....Well, more than other parties do now Brexit is seemingly happening. But the working class Tory is becoming rarer as the party seems to retreat from them into its leafy areas and Elton graduates. Still, I come from a military family and I was brought up to have pride in my country. So far in my lifetime I can see that culturally, for the ideals of secularism, that the adage 'the west is best' isn't far off... and I see no problems with cultural ethnocentrism nor non violent nationalism. I don't believe in cultural revisionism nor multiculturalism nor so many of poorly thought out ideological ideas that I believe has been forced upon the nation. The natural pace of change needed to be far slower. So I guess I stand closer to Wilo than your good self. However this is in no means a slight to you as difference of viewpoint, with it's requirement for debate, is a healthy exercise for moderation in life. In cultures that don't encourage debate we see far harsher societies. I don't know if you are referring back to that previous thread and it's 'left is brighter than right' viewpoint but I'll just repeat my thoughts on it again...Mainly because it's important that it's stated. Someone's intelligence does not factor into believing in the same politics. If this were true then IQ breakdowns around the world would broadly fit into the same left/right/libertarian/authoritarian party support. A person's worldview, and hence political support is affected by far more than logic. Family upbringing and relationships and the nature of your environment form a far more important determinate. Anyone trying to suggest that Corbyn is say more intelligent than Putin is just being foolish.

Some are fine with it in some industries because it fits their schedule...students for example...many though have little choice. Yes, try getting a mortgage on a zero hours contract, and whatever you do, dont get ill, you might starve to death if it goes on all week, and as for a holiday? The only people who like zero hours are students as mentioned or someone who has a partner earning good money and wants to get out of the house for a few hours a week!Lots of uber drivers love the scheme, they do a minimum amount of hours and get the tax payer to top up there income and pay there rent, and the company is worth £66 billion, but dont pay any tax in this country, as theyre not a taxi service, just a phone app! The buck stops at the conservative ex pm david cameron, his chancellor george, and to some extent foreign secretary boris bunter, although he was more roped in but didnt have the bottle to do the right thing, anyway, long as people are happy to use there tax hard earned money to prop up a multi billion pound company from overseas, its all good!
