The only solution to that is the reality of the technological rat race itself......that and the colonising of other planets and moons. Though perhaps humans can be banned from technological progression once our AI overlords are in charge. Edited by Stirlingsays (11 Jan 2021 1.59pm) Ha. Hopefully. Worst case scenario is being eliminated entirely! But that's another debate...

It's not being talked about in the media, but would appear to be noteworthy. The cop who was killed was dragged by the crowd, bloodied, to the ground, met with a flurry of punches and beaten with the American flag. All to the mocking chant of 'I can't breathe' with other reports that 'star spangled banner' made an appearance. He was a Trump supporter too. A rather disturbing yet apt metaphor for this Presidency.

I do think social media has a lot to answer for. Its focus on maximising time spent onsite enabled much of this hysteria. The echo chamber mindsets; a symptom of the division based incentives used to maintain engagement. People aren't uncovering unbelievable truths, they've just took up home in a virtual cell with amplified versions of their own politics and prejudices for company. There's always been problems with society, but this nuts ramping up and balconisation is definitely in part an algorithmic consequence, which is strange to think about. Social networks could take many different approaches that focus on and reward common cause, rather than the opposite. For websites, it's no doubt financially rewarding, but for users, it can do a number on them mentally. It's a conveyor belt of the most sensationalist aspects of mass media, removing any semblance of nuance, and dialling the emotional response to 100 to keep people angry and online. It's so behind the scenes that people don't see the strings being pulled, or the habit forming. The Q contingent is an example of the more out there places it can take you, the 'off the reservation' types who have a bring it on attitude to events on the Captiol too, as are examples on the left such as the 'cancel culture' types or those who think you should be in Alcatraz if you get their pronouns wrong. People in broad political alignment don't even question these crazy views or behaviours though because of the ever exaggerated them vs us bubbles we've hopped into. That's where this has got us.

And the banning of Trump from Twitter and Facebook and the attack on Parler is only going to make that even worse. Switching over to GAB myself now along with looking at stopping using Whats App. Always prided myself on wanting to engage with the widest range of people possible in terms of political debate but feel now that given the one-sided bias of the most popular platforms, that can no longer be done.

Parler gone. Build your own platforms they said. It's a free market they said. These are private companies they said.

Reckon that has to be the future given how they have their own server infrastructure. Twitter share price down as well. The last few days have been such an eye opener, on top of what happened in 2020. The bias is now so clear, and so open, that you know it has to be opposed fully. At least we will be spared the bs about Biden being the President of the 'Free World'.

The algorithms and approaches currently used by social media to maintain engagement appeal to and exaggerate our worst characteristics. They eliminate nuance and set people against each other. Then they point the finger at their users when the temperature gets too hot as if they are not integral to this whole process.

Edited by Matov (11 Jan 2021 3.40pm) I don't see it as a good thing, but re: the tweet I posted yesterday, when the shoe has politically been on the other foot it's the same old sh!t. Republicans and the religious right were elated at the baker winning a supreme court ruling when he refused to sell a wedding cake to gay couple. Sure there will be revisionist 'that's different' but really the principle is the same. A declaration that the business could not be forced to provide service to a potential customer based on some arbitrary criteria. Your attitude to the Capitol riot is off kilter. You don't get to shuffle something that heinous into someone elses column just because you would prefer it to be there.
