I found the debate yesterday a complete shambles - two thoroughly unimpressive candidates and a debate format that is designed for nothing but soundbites. "Describe your whole tax policy in 45 seconds" is just a waste of everyone's time. Sunak comes across like a petulant child, constantly interrupting and talking over people. He spent half of the debate repeating this '£2000 per household" nonsense which has already been rubbished this morning. Starmer is just not very good - he seems to think that talking about his family members employment record is sufficient to prove he'd be a good prime minister, and completely goes missing when he is asked for detail or a plan to deal with things. The fact he couldn't coherently rebut Sunak just shouting about £2000 tax increases over and over again says it all. A complete crock of s***.

One thing is certain. Brexit is not a major issue in this GE. Because no one bloody talks about it! It didn't even get a mention in passing in the debate yesterday - neither party wants to go near it; the Tories are terrified of proper scrutiny on what they've done, and Labour are terrified of scaring off leave votes. The media are happy to play along with both.

These TV 'debates' are a farce. No time for any proper discussion and a few wholly unsurprising questions about well publicised topics. Sunak was more controlled and Starmer looked (as he always does) worried and perplexed. Neither came out a convincing winner although I would prefer the one we know than the one who has no original ideas or coherant plan for the country. There may be more fun to be had on Friday when, among others, Penny Morduant has an opportunity to put Angela Raynor down a peg or two.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Sorry to disappoint anybody on here by saying this but Farage is the only one who can field an audience with any degree of skill. Whatever his views, he is a natural orator; Starmer, Sunak et all are just suits in my opinion.
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

------------------ Political parties spend all their time testing what topics the public are interested in. I agree Brexit is a hornet's nest that no one wants to poke because I think they have calculated that the public is just as divided as there were in 2016. I don't think you can blame the parties if there was an overwhelming feeling we should re-open the topic one of those parties would adopt it. As it is I believe the SNP are correct they are the only pro Rejoin party at this election.

He is a good orator, and certainly better at it than Starmer and Suank, but he's also a slimy scumbag, so it's pros and cons isn't it?

I disagree with your opening line - the political parties, in cohorts with the media class, decide which topics the public are interested in, not the other way round. How many people cared about single-sex public toilets 2 years ago? There is nothing in the polling to suggest the public is divided on Brexit. I watched it and thought that I was watching an extended version of PMQs Half of me would like to watch the subsequent debates but I'm guessing that it will just be same old, same old

Quite literally everything promised by the Leave campaign has not come to fruition; cheaper weekly shop, better NHS performance, lower immigration, cheaper energy bills, more trade with the rest of the world, easiest trade deal in history etc. etc. etc. None of it has happened, and everyone who told you it would has sailed off into the sunset... and still the penny doesn't drop that you were sold a crock of s***. In fact, Farage comes along with exactly the same sales pitch he had 8 years ago, and a good percentage of people still bloody buy it. Now that is funny.
Odd that, because I don't remember anyone expecting any of that, except maybe for lower immigration. What I do remember is Remainers telling us that Britain would become a wasteland if we left Europe. You should be grateful.
