It never fails to amaze me when it comes to environmental issues how many people speak with such utter conviction about something they know so little about.

We accept scientific fact in nearly all other walks of life, but on this one topic the Daily Express know better

Here comes Mr Smug Lefty.

Have you not noticed that scientsts get stuff wrong and sometimes very wrong? They also have a habbit of ignoring evidence that doesn't fit with the consensus view.

It's bad for getting grants and keeping their jobs.

If you can't chew the cud here where can you?....think of it as your local pub you choose to drop into time to time.

I don’t even mean specific to here, but point taken.

I’m anything but smug about the environment.

Can you point to some examples?

By science do you mean all the ones who agree with the ‘predictions’. The ones who get their living agreeing with doomsday scenarios keeping the cash flowing. Try checking the science of the few who think it’s all bollox. You do know that science, as I’ve stated before doesn’t become the truth because more are saying it. Remember the ones who were mocked when they said the earth was round. Pretty much made into heretics by dint of the truth. No one knows if it’s correct or not. What is true is that the earth is living and is going to adapt as it always has. We are but a thorn in its toe.

good point, Eagle.

some of us remember the mid 1980s when the scientists & media told us half the planet would be dead of HiV/Aids within a decade or so.
that, and a thousand other scaremonger doom stories. Global Nuclear war, the Y2K computer virus, and at least a thousand years of religious prediction doomsday b0llox

One of my colleagues was staying on site overnight for the millennium in case all the AC shut down in a data centre. He got paid 2k for one night. Ironic I would say

We all do it from time to time, life is stressful.

Still, nothing we say on here amounts to anything other than steam or venting.

That's useful in of itself but I like to think that occasionally it's good for argumentation and English/typing skills.

Yes, especially fresh water.

the environment in the new Blade-Runner movie was not that much of a fantasy.

its already like that on the Favela's of Rio or the Townships of Soweto.

It's OK. Own it.

I find this topic a lot more stressful than most others. Roy Hodgson’s current tactics one of the few exceptions.

More broadly, I like exposing myself to a lot of the right wing opinion on here - it’s not something I run into much in my ‘real’ life being a 30 year old Londoner, and it helps me to challenge and better understand my own views on things.

Not of you being an arsehole, I mean the science thing.

No. I mean those scientists who diligently and thoroughly determine facts and then submit them for peer review. Not the few who just “think” something.

Science doesn’t ever become the truth. The truth is revealed by science but is always capable of being updated by a bigger truth. That though isn’t done by theory. The world being round needed to be proved and then accepted by peer groups. That sceptics produced ridicule until then is just par for the course.

Sure the earth is living and it won’t die. It survived the great extinction and would again. I just hope we will be around to see it.
