It's not generally contested that he was shagging Aisha before puberty. To quote Wiki on this topic, '. Various ahadith stating that Aisha was either nine or ten at the time of her consummation come from collections with sahih status, meaning they are regarded as reputable by the majority of Muslims'.

This was common practise for the time and indeed up until the middle ages in Europe.

The problem is that we don't elevate those people up as the 'ideal man', whereas that is what Mohammad is taught as within Islam.

Thankfully the west stopped this as a culturally acceptable practice a very long time ago. Other countries have only done so in name.....and plenty are iffy at that.

Errr....sorry, where is the citing of any accepted Islamic source suggesting that?

The consensus within Islam is that this was a child bride. I will repeat the Wiki quote again here:

'Various ahadith stating that Aisha was either nine or ten at the time of her consummation come from collections with sahih status, meaning they are regarded as reputable by the majority of Muslims'

You are not speaking for truth here. You are simply echoing the discomfort of some western Muslims as they try to justify and muddy this part of their religious tradition.

There's a slight difference in basing your morals on fairy stories which include dubiously old men, with said religion updating their teaching in accordance with modern acceptability and basing your way of life on the actions of a vicious paedophile, who conversely you are ordered to obey, whether he's real or not.

I'm always suspicious of people who apologise for stuff like this...

My understanding of the scriptures, which presumably must be overridden by the law of the country, is that it was legal to have sex with your wife only after puberty but you could marry prior to puberty.

But this is historic and not in operation in Syria now. Turns out in Syria it's legal to have sex from the age of 15, but not before.

I still think 15 is too young.

When I use to work on a greyhound track this guy use to say that if there's grass on the pitch it's time to play....Not good.

Different people mature at different rates but society has to have an age of consent and 16 seems about right.

At an individual level they're people over and under the age limit which the law may not be appropriate for. Laws that contain age restrictions are arbitrary by their very nature and rely on the consensus of the people and if it comes to it the common sense of a judge.

Back in the seventies there was a move to reduce the age of consent to around 13/14. This was supported by very dubious people but also by serious politicians like Harriet Harman. In the context of that time there were campaigns around cannabis, gay rights (you had to be 21), women's rights, civil rights etc and this was just another movement for a freer society.

In hindsight most of the serious people who supported that now take a very different attitude and I think it safe to say that the public's attitude has harden as well. This also applied in other European countries which previously had lower age limits which have now been increased.

I suspect there are now more people who think the age should be increased rather than reduced.

I am with you there Stirling

I watched as my teens grew up. They were surprisingly sage about the whole thing and knew that getting too involved with someone too early could backfire.

16 worked for them. As I believe it would work as a voting age!

Na.....No one gets to vote unless it's for some right wing party....new rule.

Only sensible women allowed to vote as well.....So that's half of them out at a stroke.

No Millwall, Arsenal or Brighton....or below 5 out of 10 uglies or feminists.....which is pretty much the same thing.

Right...now I've sorted the country out I'm getting a coffee.

I'm sure there are plenty of underage girls who are capable of dealing with sex but it really isn't about that. It is more to do with protecting the vulnerable from predatorial types and to help stop the prostitution of children.
The original law was created in Victorian times when the latter was common.

Yep, while we don't want to get paranoid about it, we all know that they are out there.....Children need people looking out for them....and those evil b******s look for the ones gone astray.
