Just returned from the US...

Have never seen it so divided in the past 40 years, due to the DT's antics and the undermining of the integrity of the office of the presidency

Republican Party showing signs of falling apart.

As the previous poster said,Sheriff Joe consciously and repeatedly broke the law..no shades of legal doubt.

DT refers to him as a "patriot"...

The same "patriot" who over his"24-year tenure as sheriff of Maricopa county, .. gained notoriety for detaining hundreds of undocumented immigrants in a Tent City jail and forcing them to wear pink underwear. The sheriff courted controversy and media attention – calling his own jail a “concentration camp”, ... and selling replica pink underwear to the public – as he became a national figurehead for the virulent xenophobia that Trump embraced in his presidential campaign.

...Hilarie Bass, the president of the American Bar Association, said in a statement: “Pardoning a law enforcement officer who has disobeyed the courts and violated the rights of people he has sworn to protect undercuts judicial authority and the public’s faith in our legal system.”

With all due respect , what a load of bollox.

The office of the presidency has been completely devoid of ''integrity'' for bloody decades.
In real life we now have black people who were never slaves fighting white people who were never Nazis over a confederate statue erected by democrats and blaming it all on Trump.
Blinkered thinking (you're not alone in this) is the biggest cause of many of these problems.

Seconded.

A pardon done without a recommendation from the DOJ, and under the cover of a Friday night / hurricane.

And let's not be confused here: Sherriff Arpaio targeted and locked up American citizens because they looked Hispanic. He was told to stop; he signed an agreement to say that he'd stop; and he kept on doing it. Only then was he prosecuted.

Trump pardoned him with there being no legal confusion or conflict about his conviction. He did it because "Sherriff Joe" is a perfect political metaphor.

It is a weird one. Mostly sentences are commuted by pardons and for clearly defined crimes. In this case Arpaio hadn't even been sentenced and was convicted of contempt of court for refusing to obey the law. Pardoning a contempt of court ruling is pretty much saying that it doesn't matter if you adhere to the rule of law or not.

There is an ongoing attempt to completely delegitimise both the media and judiciary. That way he can soften people up for the inevitable pardons he will issue in relation to those around him. All to protect himself of course.

Thanks equally for your, with all due respect, "utter bollox" response.

Trump denudes the presidency of even the limited integrity holders of the office usually seem forced to exhibit as national symbols. He is an exemplar of the new age, seemingly so welcomed by some seconders and thirders on here .He is a part of the problem, not a part of the solution.(The problem is not simply reduceable to the Fed Reserve and its ilk).

In real life we now in the USA have right thinking people battling right wing racists and their sympathisers over statues erected by racists commemorating racists.

Blindness(you're not alone in this), is a factor exacerbating rather than abating these problems.

You can't see the bigger picture.......but you're not alone in being wrong.
Trump is not the problem, the system (here as well as the IOUSA) IS the problem.
You can bash the keyboard as long as you like bud but your time would be better spent looking into why those who follow you will be worse off than you are at this moment in time.
So stop dicking about with stuff that ultimately doesn't matter and start looking into why you are worse off than your grandparents.
Expand your well intentioned thoughts.

Of course you are right, there is a bigger macro picture.
But,on a micro level, which is what I was posting about, as Richard Neville so aptly put it,there may only be an inch of difference between the parties (or by extension within the entrails of "the system" )but it is that inch we live in.

And my recent observations of the US were of more conflict and antagonism than at any time on the past 40 years (during which I've regularly visited) and that DT is very much a negative symptom/symbol not a positive one..

I think it's the other way round; Trump's stupidity entitles rational people to voice their opinion when with a more rational president most people dont feel a need to express themselves.

See voter turnout figures in US elections since 1950s. Trump is so clearly a loose cannon, but some of his supporters wouldn't admit it even if he were to cause them actual harm!
