I don’t want the BBC influenced by advertisers any more than I do by governments. The problem with funding from general taxation is that it gives too much direct power to a government who is upset at its treatment. Which is just about all of them. It could be done but would need to be ring fenced in a way than ensures continuity with the level assessed by a body independent of government. My preference is to continue with the licence but to also add the charge to the cost of the licence to internet contracts for anybody not able to show they hold a licence. This could be extended to data on SIM cards. Prove you have a licence and it doesn’t get added. All you would need to do is enter your licence number (or personal ID if we ever get round to having one) and the computers take care of the rest.

Seriously? Both TV and radio figures keep going down for their headline shows. Each year hundreds of thousands of people are deciding to not to pay their licence either because they can't afford to and risk prosecution or more likely they see the BBC as irrelevant to their lives. Meanwhile the most loyal demographic of BBC viewers (retired) are largely ignored when it comes to programming as the BBC chases the youth who are not interested. The BBC complains of lack of funds whilst their staff and unions fight any reforms. The BBC pension scheme is gold plated and better than most of ours. There is a huge overlap of resources between departments due to empire building. So far any changes the BBC has made have been fought tooth and nail and are not exactly deep cuts. So no I don't think the BBC is doing well with change. Edited by Badger11 (12 Dec 2023 8.51am) With the speed of change today there is always a time lag. Resistance to change by employees exists everywhere there are employees, who will fight to preserve pension benefits. These things are true, but natural. Despite this the huge organisation that is the BBC are adapting and changing as the need is recognised. Of course the young have different habits to the older. I didn’t watch much TV either as a kid. But the BBC is as important for them as it is to all of us, even if currently it’s not important to them. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Try changing the bath water.

What is transparent is that there is a campaign by the right to undermine one of our remaining great national assets by amplifying every issue and seeking to position it as just another broadcaster. The truth is that the BBC is adapting well to the fast changing world in which it operates without compromising itself. Its independence is as vital a protection against authoritarian government as is the monarchy and those who wish its destruction are fools. It’s fact checking and news verification makes it the most reliable source of information we have. Be careful what you wish for. I have no issue with it withdrawing from areas in which commercial broadcasters can supply a worthwhile service. That’s evolution. If that enables it to do what’s really important even better I am content. So less “Strictly “, which I hate as total garbage, and more Panarama, Life on Earth and Radio 4. And we all need to pay for it. Whether we use it or not. National assets aren’t opt outs. We must all pay our share. Even if that is to provide reliable information to our children. So reliable its head factchecker lied on her CV (And other sources are available before we get cries of "Oh but it's The Sun"
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Just a few bits of "fact checked" and "reliable" information that needed to be corrected recently on the BBC.

Interestingly, taking posters on here, there is a big old Venn diagram between Brexit voters and those who are now vehemently anti-BBC.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

She was young, admitted her mistake and learned from it. If you have even seen the things she does and how she exposes misinformation you would understand that whatever she did as a youngster has helped her do a better job now.

It’s the same group of angry discontents relying on instinct and not on reason for their attitudes. Such people have always existed but today they just make more noise because of the internet.
