The division has been widened by circumstances.
Identity politics is a symptom of minorities trying to assert themselves and the majority seeing that this spells trouble for them.

Minorities arguing their cases has always existed as has those in power wishing to retain it.

What's different is the widespread, uncontrolled, unedited distribution of propaganda. Conspiracy theory dressed up as "news" and information via social media. Identity politics is a symptom of this and not the cause.

Those who wish to destroy western democracy for their own benefit have exploited this to first identify the divisions and then to widen them.

Whatever our political approach is we ought all be united in resisting this and supportive of the efforts now being started to overcome it. We must not see these efforts as any kind of attack on "free speech" because what is being done is to attack freedom itself. Spreading lies is not indulging in free speech.

So talking about those who wish to destroy western democracy isn’t buying into a conspiracy theory?

Not unless you believe our security services trade in conspiracy theories!

Not only ours either. All of those who form the "5 eyes" co-operative group say the same thing.

I would say it is a fact.

That people like Trump seek to dismiss it as "fake news" asks more questions about their motivations than it does about the veracity of the views of the security services.

Most people who believe in conspiracy theories think they are facts as well.

Of course they do! That's why they believe in them.

The security forces are not though expressing individual views. They are giving the consolidated professional assessments of a large group of specialists.

I therefore think it is safe to assume they are based on fact and not on fantasy.

Depends how big the conspiracy is! They are, after all, masters of misdirection. It’s probably safer to assume that anything in the public domain isn’t the full or necessarily the true story.

Only a liar or someone who has no experience of working within organisations suggests that they speak with one voice.

I've already heard official dissent with what was said by Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu.

The man should be sacked along with the person or people who promoted him.

It would be impossible, in my view, to keep any "conspiracy" on such a scale secret. No, what we have seen is all the major western intelligence agencies reaching the same overall conclusion. Of course there will be differences of emphasis by each, and various people within each, but their findings are clear.

Of course not everything will be released. That's the nature of their business, but when they do release information of this kind, together and with such authority, we can trust it. Their whole future depends on that.

This is an amusing post given that the vast majority of the media is left/liberal.
Any 'propaganda' is a reaction to the undermining of Western society, values and culture by the rapid flow of migrants that no one asked for.
Unlike you, some people can see that the future will not be how they would want it.
You think that action needs to be taken to silence the critics of 'globalisation' simply because you support it.
Those who wish to 'destroy western democracy' are the very same people that you support.
